R-Teleconverters; ROM or NOT (3-CAM)

All:

 

The teleconverters are very handy accessories.

 

The 2X APO-Converter has been available in the ROM version for at least 2 or 3 years. Yet, the 1.4X APO-Converter is still NOT!

 

Note that the Leica web site tries to hide this distinction (cleverly?) by NOT labelling the 2X converter as ROM, and (obviously), not the 1.4X either! The photos do not show the ROM on the 2X mount, or its absence on the 1.4

 

Any insights into this???

my initial guess is that the longer lenses that the 1.4x can be used on don't have ROM contacts to transfer data for, but thats wrong, or that a great many of the lenses are 2cam and should have some extender provided to the legacy users (like Doug).

 

Looking at the Leica website, I see what you mean, and that my reasoning doesn't apply

 

My question has to do with their table vs the statement: "The LEICA APO-EXTENDER-R 2x, constructed from seven elements in five groups, is designed for lens units with a maximum aperture of 1:2 or smaller, and they reduces the aperture by 2 f/stops. So when used with the LEICA SUMMILUX-R 50 mm f/1.4, for example, there is no increase in light compared to using a lens with a 1:2 aperture number"

 

In the table below, both the 50 & 80 Lux's become 100/2.8 & 160/2.8, not F/4 lenses

 

which is right?

As I dont' have either the 1.4x nor 2x extender, would someone mind telling me which is accurate?

 

after reading this, I'm not sure if it should be in its own thread, but I think it fits under Guy's question

I have the 2X-APO-Extender-ROM, and although I have used it with longer lenses, such as the 135 Elmarit-R, the 80-200 Vario-Elmar-R and the 350 Telyt-R, I never thought of using it with shorter lenses, such as the 80 Summilux.

You are perfectly correct in that the documentation on the Leica web site is confusing. Although the text says that the Summiluxes should be stopped down to f2.0 or smaller, the table shows the combination of the 50mm f1.4 Summilux-R and the 2X-APO-Extender as a 100mm f2.8 combo, not 100mm f4, which it should be if one cannot use the Summilux at 1.4 with the extender. Go figure.

 

My question was on the ROM feature itself. Why is the 1.4X Extender not ROM, particularly since it has recently been redesigned as an APO???

The 1.4X has always been APO as far as I can recall, I got mine in 1996 obviously non-ROM. The information still gets transferred although I don't think I've used it yet in conjunction with the DMR so that part I still need to check out.

The 1.4x has always been an APO.

 

I suspect the protruding element of the 1.4x is too large to allow rom contacts to be fitted in the sapce between the element and the lens mount.
