'Mike the bike' Hailwood hung up his leathers and helmet 1967 after many world championships in numerous classes of motorcycle racing, including 12 wins in various displacement classes at tghe Isle of Man TT. So good was he, that by the time of his retirement he was widely considered the greatest rider ever. He tried several other endeavors, including starting a business in New Zealand but got bored and decided to get back to racing 11 years later. Against the advice of knowledgable supporters, friends and and experts who were concerned he would

1. fail

2. make a fool of himself

3. get hurt or worse, killed

4. destroy a brilliant career and damage his reputation

he entered the '78 Isle of Man TT and won it in an overwhelming display of absolute dominance for the 13th time, shattering previous records and enjoying an improbable 2-minute advantage over the runner-up.

This is the very machine he rode that day, ..........truly a treasure.

I used to bike with a couple of friends. One had a Mike Hailwood Replica, the other a 900SS (I had a Guzzi). The Replica was driven hard and had numerous prangs which fortunately usually only damaged the fairing. Fortunately the owner of the 900SS ran a body repair shop so he used to mend and respray the fairing for its owner. After one of the crashes the Replica went in for repair and repaint and as a joke was resplendent in army camouflage when its owner came to collect it. Unfortunately I don't have a photo which I regret.
