Hi all,

I´m thinking about getting the 24-90 zoom to pair with my SL2. So far I have been shooting  with M lenses (35FLE, 50APOand 90APO), APO macro 100, and Canon MP65 with good results.

Lately I attend a lot of artistic events (openings, artists meetings, performances...) and I feel  I´m missing a lot of shots using the Sl2 with M primes. Besides I have been thinking about adding a 21 for interiors and landscapes. If the 24-90 is usable for landscapes at its widest I could cover all my photographic needs....

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

Any advice on the tactics to convince my lovely, beautiful....and stingy wife to buy the lens would be greatly appreciated 😎

You can't go wrong with it, one of the best zoom ever done, impressive sharpness full range.

You can do wonderful portraits of your wife 🙂

 Thanks Luca!

How is  the autofocus speed and accuracy? Have you used it for landscapes ?

I'm using for portraits,  landscape even street when I don't have with me my q2 with great results.

AF is fine unless you use it in very low light situations where still SL2 seems to have some issue which Im sure will be mostly solved with coming firmware updates.

It sounds you are looking for a lens for evening events. To me f4 is slow aperture to focus in low light situations. I would prefer a 2.8 lens, it would increase your AF performance

The Vario-Elmarit-SL 24-90mm f/2.8-4 ASPH lens is sharp at maximum aperture but stops down to about f 3.2 at 35mm and f3.6 at 50mm (according to the top display).  The image stabilization in the camera and the lens should allow you to shoot at 1/10 second and possibly longer, and as many have reported shooting at 6400 is quite practical in most cases.   The issue becomes one of greater depth of field shooting at smaller apertures than you might with one of your primes.   A review of your portfolio should answer that question.  As for landscapes (normally shot at f5.6 or f8) the lens is better than just fine.

I use this lens all the time with my SL in low light indoors for event and performance photography (theatre, music). Aperture isn't the main problem - even an extra 2 stops wouldn't make a major difference - you always want another couple of stops! And for performance I rarely want the thin DOF that a wide aperture at 90mm gives you (with portraits it is another matter). The work-arounds I use are (a) shooting in B&W (colour images in low light have limitations anyway) and (b) understanding your subjects so that you shoot in the momentary stillness when a slower shutter speed can be used (e.g. when a dance pose is held - I find that a shot half way through a dance movement or a spoken sentence is rarely attractive).

Thank you all for your advice and kindness. I guess I will take the plunge.... I don´t need wider apertures in the situations in which I intend to use the lens, so it seems like a really good option.
