I initially bought the original SL to shoot it paired with the 0.95 Noctilux. Now the SL2 is out and I screwed on the 0.95 today for the first time :) Fine, so far. No issues, and why should there be any?

The only thing I am pondering on is the increasing resolution with the new sensor and those to come in future. will the "older" lens designs keep up matching the increase in megapixel increase?

Any thoughts and/or experiences?

Why not go out and shoot and see for yourself 😉😀?  All lenses benefits from more megapixels but not all lenses can take full advantage of the increase in pixels (resolution). I have the Noctilux, but not yet the SL2, and I believe that the lens will take full advantage of the new sensor.

Now get out and shoot so you can share your experience of the combo with us...😁

Camara is in the bag and ready to go :)  ..... will go to sleep, first 🧸

It  is a good combination, I started using it with the affordable GABALE adapter to overcome the 1m minimum limit...

The noctilux is a speciality lens ....... at 0.95 so little is in focus that I would have thought sensor resolution was the least limiting factor.

I’ve yet to see any reports from folk anywhere that having upgraded to high megapixel sensors their existing lenses perform noticeably worse ..... and that goes for a wide range of manufacturers. Very critical examination at sub f5.6 on some lenses may show some differences, but at f5.6-11 most would perform well enough to make it difficult to tell ........ and above that diffraction starts to interfere.

Remember .... you have to jump from 24mpx to 96mpx to increase linear resolution by x2 ...... and that is what is important in the lppm measurement.

Good point. That was also the background of my question. Is the aesthetically significant wide open rendering:

worse

same

or better

with a higher res sensor?

So far, I extensively shot portraits with the Thambar M and the 50 Lux SL on the SL and the SL2, likewise. Both lenses are stunning performers in the sense of their particular rendering properties. My preliminary result: I do not bother shooting either body lens combination in the same session. I am jet undecided, if I should give the SL2 priority over the SL using the Thambar because of IBIS advantages.

The Thambar is an extreme example of the design style of older f/1.4 and faster lenses, which aim to be sharp in the center, preserving strong contrast, and soft and flarey everywhere else.  It's a portrait look.  Hollywood in the '30s and 40s, perhaps.  So the SL2 will contribute a little extra on center, but I can't see that it would make a significant difference.  For street shots where the interest is on-center but interesting things happen all around the frame, the SL2's resolution is a plus, regardless of the rendering style.  And for landscape shots at f/5.6 or anything in the "f/8 and be there" world, the SL2's resolution has to be an advantage.

the are lenses that do not so well. there is a big difference between the 90mm Summicron and the 90mm APO f2.  the older lens does not have the resolution to hold up 40mp.

that said even newer lenses like the NoctiluxM smears in the corners of the new sensor of the SL2..

Can you post a sample, how the 0.95 smears? What adapter do you use?

Interesting. There seems to be some corner blur. Hm, is this due to higher sensor resolution?

My old 90 Cron screams on the SL2.  Check out Roger C.’s (of Lensrentals) blog about the function of image res= lens x camera.  Thus a lens will do better with higher MP.  If it resolved 75% of 24mp, then it’ll resolve 75% of 47mp.   That of course has a limit, but such limit was not apparent on consumer cameras he tested (which was most high MP cameras out there).  Thus, in this example, the resolution may not be 75% of 500mp, but it’ll certainly resolve more than 24mp out of 500mp.
