M9reno Posted January 28, 2020 Share #1 Posted January 28, 2020 Advertisement (gone after registration) Apologies for an old question, but it had not happened to me before... Is this a dead pixel? See the thin vertical line running down the middle of the lower part of the image (1:1 zoom). It shows up on all of my images except those where it disappears in light areas. The camera is my new second-hand Monochrom bought a fortnight ago from Red Dot, and I had not noticed it before today. Presumably they'll help me out regardless of what it is... Thanks for your help! Advertisement Posted January 28, 2020 Posted January 28, 2020 Hi M9reno, Take a look here Dead pixel?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
marcg Posted January 29, 2020 Share #2 Posted January 29, 2020 (edited) I don't know if it's a dead pixel. I thought a dead pixel resulted in a single point of bright light. I don't know what would cause a line down the image – but you're right, it's not good. I'm sure Red Dot will be wonderfully supportive and will sort you out – but in the event you have any difficulty, you may be interested to know that the Consumer Rights Act 2015 entitles you to reject within the first 30 days any goods which you purchase if there is a defect. Any defect which emerges within the first 30 days – and indeed during the first six months is assumed to have existed at the time of purchase. In order to take advantage of this "short-term right to reject" you have to assert the right by letting them know – preferably in writing – that you are asserting your "short-term right to reject" under the act because of the defect. If you fail to assert the right – then you will lose it. This doesn't mean that you then are deemed to have accepted all defects, but it simply makes life a little less straightforward. If you assert your short-term right to reject, it doesn't mean that you have then to reject the goods. It simply means that you have reserved your position – but the assertion must be done within the first 30 days. You don't lose anything by asserting the right and at least you have covered your arse. If you fail to assert your right within 30 days – then within the first six months you have a right to demand a repair and if a single repair fails then you fall back on your right to reject the item and demand a refund or a replacement. I'm sure that Red Dot will be great. I'm sure they are a thoroughly responsible outlet which is concerned for the interests of their customers and for their own reputation. However, you now know the situation and what it means to you is that if you want you can insist on a refund or a replacement, you don't have to accept an attempt a repair or sending it off to Germany or anything with all of the consequential delay. Refunds or replacements are to be made within a reasonable period of time – generally reckoned to be seven days. You spent your hard earned cash on this camera, and there is no need for you to be without it for several weeks or even longer. If they send the camera off to Germany for repair, then they can sell it again quite easily when it eventually comes back – assuming that you have accepted a refund or a replacement I suppose this post sounds very conflict- oriented – but I'm just letting you know what your full position is. I find that most people in UK seem generally to be unaware. Edited January 29, 2020 by marcg 1
Marac Posted January 29, 2020 Share #3 Posted January 29, 2020 looks like a dead pixel to me, sometimes it can take the whole row out. Ivor is a Gent and will deal with the issue in a professional manner. I had this issue on an M9M many years ago and Leica Mayfair dealt with everything.
marcg Posted January 29, 2020 Share #4 Posted January 29, 2020 That's interesting. How come it can take a whole row out? I had never imagined that might be possible. It shows what I know about the Consumer Rights Act – and how little I know about LCD screens and dead pixels! I agree that I'm sure that Red Dot will deal with it very properly and with great goodwill.
wattsy Posted January 29, 2020 Share #5 Posted January 29, 2020 (edited) Yes, looks like a dead pixel induced line. I'm sure Red Dot will deal with it without any quibble. No need to read the riot act just yet.😀 Edited January 29, 2020 by wattsy
M9reno Posted January 29, 2020 Author Share #6 Posted January 29, 2020 Red Dot is on to it and being very responsive. I know I'll be without the camera for some weeks, which is a bummer. On the other hand, I've become peculiarly fond of it during the last fortnight, and it will be good to know (once I have it back) that it's been checked so recently and as good as new.
marcg Posted January 29, 2020 Share #7 Posted January 29, 2020 Advertisement (gone after registration) One further thing to add – is that if Red Dot want to send it back to Germany – and if you agree to this, it can sometimes result in substantial delays. There are really quite excessive delays reported here on this forum from time to time – but on the other hand, there are also reports that once your camera gets to Germany, not only do they repair the problem but at the same time they do a full service and recalibration – so it's not all bad. Of course I suppose there is a risk that they don't have the parts to support this camera any more – and in that event, I suppose you would either be offered a refund or some kind of upgrade.

Yes, I expect to be without the camera until the spring. But, as I said, the reward will be a fully serviced camera, and presumably some warranty for the work. I have really enjoyed the camera and will really miss it, but I have other toys to entertain me in the meantime. 3 minutes ago, marcg said: Of course I suppose there is a risk that they don't have the parts to support this camera any more – and in that event, I suppose you would either be offered a refund or some kind of upgrade. I think the MM1 is still fully supported, even should Leica deem the (new, corrosion-proof) sensor needs replacing. Note the other current thread about Leica making a small mint from re-circulating recently refurbed MM1s and M9s.
marcg Posted January 29, 2020 Share #9 Posted January 29, 2020 Damn, I was hoping they might offer you a new M10M, cheap by way of compensation.

The M9M is camera enough for me, and my plan is to barricade myself solidly in the M9 CCD generation as long as my "new" M9P and M9M can take it. Film is still my main interest, however. Marac Posted January 29, 2020 Share #11 Posted January 29, 2020 I really miss my M9M with the E58 Noctilux on the front *sigh* those were the days.
