Well, Rip-Off Britain is alive and well in Milton Keynes.

I predicted Leica UK would round their prices up with the 50mm being £695 and the others being £895. As it turns out, they've gone for £690 and £890 just to spite me but they have a cynical greed. If I was in the market for these lenses, which I am not, I'd have a fab weekend in Berlin and buy there instead.

Simply put, Leica UK are the pits when it comes to pricing...

In the EU it's NOT allowed to have fixed prices, all the dealers are free to put their own selling price on the products. If Leica dictates the dealer to sell ONLY for the price they advice, Leica risks a big fine from the EU commission.

I'm not sure the prices are that different. Once you strip out the 19% German VAT, use a typical consumer exchange rate then apply the 17.5% UK VAT, the difference seems to be about a tenner for the 50mm and thirty or forty quid for the others. I like Berlin a lot but I'm not sure I'd take a trip there to save £40.

Frank, I agree that's the theory. Now show me the UK dealers offering 10% off an M8 <grin>

Prices in the UK are too high, no doubt about that. If it's any consolation - which it's not - they were even higher in France than in the UK. When I lived there I ordered my Nocti from the UK and saved hundreds of pounds.

Mark,

its rip off Britain, not just Leica UK.

I'm sure Leica UK set prices in conjunction with the Solms beancounters anyway...

I blame it on the ludicrous property price fixation in the UK, if property wasnt so expensive its cost wouldnt need to be amortised on the price of nearly every product / service. Just one of the reasons I like living 'over here' :D

Ah but Sweden more than has its compensations - the climate, clean air, the food, the glorious looking women. I worked for several months in Kista north of Stockholm on a project for a retailer, NK, and had a great time, travelling up with Scotch and Acquavit on a Monday and back with Gravadlax and Cloudberries on a Friday. In between, lots of work and concerts, restaurants, jazz. Stockholm is a great city and the archipelago is just wonderful.
