marknorton Posted August 7, 2007 Share #1 Posted August 7, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Well, Rip-Off Britain is alive and well in Milton Keynes. In this thread... http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/customer-forum/30564-4-new-summarits-11.html#post321330 I predicted Leica UK would round their prices up with the 50mm being £695 and the others being £895. As it turns out, they've gone for £690 and £890 just to spite me but they have a cynical greed. If I was in the market for these lenses, which I am not, I'd have a fab weekend in Berlin and buy there instead. Simply put, Leica UK are the pits when it comes to pricing... Advertisement Posted August 7, 2007 Posted August 7, 2007 Hi marknorton, Take a look here Summarit-M: UK Prices Announced. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
stunsworth Posted August 7, 2007 Share #2 Posted August 7, 2007 I rather doubt that Leica UK decide the prices, I would have thought it's far more likely to be Solms.
marknorton Posted August 7, 2007 Author Share #3 Posted August 7, 2007 In which case, my last sentence should be re-arranged: Leica are the pits when it comes to UK pricing... They do it all the time, the M8 is nearly £200 overpriced in the UK.
freusen Posted August 7, 2007 Share #4 Posted August 7, 2007 In the EU it's NOT allowed to have fixed prices, all the dealers are free to put their own selling price on the products. If Leica dictates the dealer to sell ONLY for the price they advice, Leica risks a big fine from the EU commission. Frank Reusen.
wattsy Posted August 7, 2007 Share #5 Posted August 7, 2007 I'm not sure the prices are that different. Once you strip out the 19% German VAT, use a typical consumer exchange rate then apply the 17.5% UK VAT, the difference seems to be about a tenner for the 50mm and thirty or forty quid for the others. I like Berlin a lot but I'm not sure I'd take a trip there to save £40.
stunsworth Posted August 7, 2007 Share #6 Posted August 7, 2007 Frank, I agree that's the theory. Now show me the UK dealers offering 10% off an M8 <grin> Prices in the UK are too high, no doubt about that. If it's any consolation - which it's not - they were even higher in France than in the UK. When I lived there I ordered my Nocti from the UK and saved hundreds of pounds.
wattsy Posted August 7, 2007 Share #7 Posted August 7, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Frank, I agree that's the theory. Now show me the UK dealers offereing 10% off an M8 I was offered a decent (£200) discount on an M8 from a UK authorised dealer fairly recently. stunsworth Posted August 7, 2007 Share #8 Posted August 7, 2007 I was offered a decent (£200) discount on an M8 from a UK authorised dealer fairly recently. Not a bad discount.
wizard Posted August 7, 2007 Share #9 Posted August 7, 2007 Mark, prices for products in the UK are always higher, as the producers have to adjust them for left-hand driving..., or so I was told :) Cheers, Andy
marknorton Posted August 7, 2007 Author Share #10 Posted August 7, 2007 Of course, that's the reason! LOL.
timd. Posted August 7, 2007 Share #11 Posted August 7, 2007 And of course you have to adjust the rangefinder to inches, feet and yards...

Mark, its rip off Britain, not just Leica UK. I'm sure Leica UK set prices in conjunction with the Solms beancounters anyway... I blame it on the ludicrous property price fixation in the UK, if property wasnt so expensive its cost wouldnt need to be amortised on the price of nearly every product / service. Just one of the reasons I like living 'over here' Guy
marknorton Posted August 7, 2007 Author Share #15 Posted August 7, 2007 Guy, I agree, the fixation over property prices here is completely ridiculous. My employees have to live where they can afford to live, not where I would like them to live in the interests of the business.
plasticman Posted August 8, 2007 Share #16 Posted August 8, 2007 I do as much hardware shopping as possible when I'm over in the UK - save myself a lot of money compared to prices here in Sweden...
marknorton Posted August 8, 2007 Author Share #17 Posted August 8, 2007 Ah but Sweden more than has its compensations - the climate, clean air, the food, the glorious looking women. I worked for several months in Kista north of Stockholm on a project for a retailer, NK, and had a great time, travelling up with Scotch and Acquavit on a Monday and back with Gravadlax and Cloudberries on a Friday. In between, lots of work and concerts, restaurants, jazz. Stockholm is a great city and the archipelago is just wonderful.
