The special editions may seem to be a diversion, but people buy them and that is why they get produced.  It is utterly naive to think that Leica should not seek to maximize its revenues and profits, just like any other company.   A similar complaint is sometimes made that Leica should limit its product line to M rangefinders and not "divert" effort to other products, such as CL, SL, S, etc.  The marketplace has spoken on this, and Leica is healthier because it has adapted to what the marketplace supports (or demands).

Looking at the most recent special editions it would be hard to see where there was any cost involved or drag on R&D: about 10 minutes work I would think to come up will all of them. Most of them are so devoid of any creative effort or performance improvement that they are essentially free money, being bought by people who likely already have several collectibles, and just want another collectible.

In one minute I can develop all L mount Leica's with switchable sensors: monochrome or RGB, full frame of ASP-C.

OMG!
