Hey guys!

In the market for a 50mm APO and wanting some special. Found a black chrome 50mm APO and looks gorgeous . It’s going for $8,000. In store normal black APO is $11,200 here in Australia. Is there a catch here? Is this an older model?

I would love a black chrome APO with red writing but can’t find anything on it. Maybe a summilux but can’t find one as an APO except the limited edition black chrome APO that has the old School design that im not a fan of.

In principle I would be very anxious buying an $8.5K lens on Gumtree.

I will be meeting up with them in person as they’re from the same city as I am. They’ve requested that I inspect etc.

As for this lens? Do you know if it’s an older version? Is there only one series of the APO 50mm model? I know there’s different limited editions etc.

I'm a bit confused. The ad linked to shows a used "standard black" (I.E. anodized, not black chrome) 50mm APO-Summicron-M (of the current type) with the yellow/white engraving.

As a used bit of gear, it should cost less than the identical item bought new and unused (e.g. direct from Leica to a dealer to you, unopened).

No expert on converting $AUS (nor how VAT may apply to used vs. new gear in Oz), but I see one US store (well-known and reliable) is offering a used "standard" APO-Summicron for $US 6395. That is a 20% discount over the same lens from the same store, brand-new ($7995). Some are offered on Fleabay for as low as US$6000 (25% less than "new").

If my math is right, this used copy is going for a 29% discount from new - not all that out of line if the seller is "motivated to sell" or the lens is several years old and not in pristine cosmetic condition. (Gosh, has the ASMA 50mm actually been around nearly seven years already?)

Anyway, the 50mm APO-Summicron-M ASPH has always been issued in basically one standard version, black anodized or silver chrome. And a black-with-red-numbers special edition (and others).

There is no previous version as such - although (and actual users will have to chime in here) I believe there was a flare issue with some early copies of the standard type, which required the lenses be serviced by Leica under warranty by painting the edges of one glass element black (as shown in headline photo).

That is not "RARE" black chrome APO 50, that it's just normal black chrome version 50APO. I have one just like his.

The "RARE" APO 50 I think it's the LHSA black paint version like this one but actually not that"RARE" there are still shops have it in stock.

By the way before you buy it, make sure the lens is not the earliest batch, the earliest batches have flaring issue, you can send it back to Leica to get it fixed for free but not sure if that still apply for todate.

Maxfairclough,  I owned the black chrome M 50 APO Summicron.  You can find it on the Leica Camera Ag website with additional information.  Scroll down half way and you can read all about it.  Try:  https://au.leica-camera.com/Photography/Leica-M/Leica-M-Special-Editions .  The lens you are looking at on Gumtree as pictured is the standard APO 50 Summicron.  Both Adan's Post 4 and Darkinners Post 5 are correct.  In the case of the lens you seek, black chrome, it is not rare.  Leica is making 700 pieces.  You can still buy it new via the Leica Store in Sydney or Melbourne.  The lens black chrome lens is more heavy than the standard anodized APO 50, same optical setup.  If you buy the black chrome version used in excellent condition expect to pay $9-10K AUD.  Hope this helps.  r/ Mark

There is a "limited" edition version out now, not the "LHSA" version.  It goes for around $14k new in AUD.

I looked at both that version and the normal one (like being sold here) and opted for the normal one.  My main reason was that I did not like the absence of the focus tab on the special version.

Here are the current options from B&H

https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?Ntt=leica apo-summicron-m 50mm f%2F2 asph. lens&N=0&InitialSearch=yes&sts=ps

The rather beautiful LHSA black paint version (shown above) can be found with a bit of searching, eg
