Leica delivered this lens (ca. 1999) with its own LTM to M adapter.  When I traded mine to Richard Caplan in 2011, I included the adapter though he did not insist. Since good LTM adapters were scarce around then, it was tempting to hold on to it.  These adapters must be out there.

The original Leica adapters don’t work on live view M cameras. I use the Leica adapters, of which I must have seven or eight when using my film M’s with LTM lenses. I have found to get the adapters to work consistently with digital live view cameras, the adapters must be black chromed or black anodised. Sometimes a silver/bright adapter will work if you paint in.a code but not every time. Often the coding pits are not sufficiently accurately milled and the reflections from the bright dividers on the milled pits can give the wrong lens code or the “no lens” message. I am tempted to try a Fotodiox Pro adapter, as it is matt finished and looks very well made. It is a lot cheaper than an imported Rayqual would be. I must do a stocktake of my LTM adapters tomorrow to see if I have any gaps.

The problem is that if the IR detectors pick up an unrecognised 6 bit code, you will get the no lens detected message. Unless the firmware  has changed, you cannot get past this message to declare a specific lens. Therefore unless you put in a recognisable code, it is best to have the whole area on the adapter that sits in front of the IR detectors black, so that there is no signal, then you can choose a lens from the menu. When mounting unknown M lenses, the mount is pretty light tight, so even a chrome mount looks black to the IR system.

The seller of the. Adapter I am returning felt I was being unreasonable in saying that a variation of .02mm in thickness does matter as does the adapter being up to .05mm too thin. He obviously knows nothing about lens optics. I have referred him to Roger Cicala’s Lens Rentals blog, where Roger shows the disastrous effect on MTF’s of tiny inaccuracies of lens adapters.

I have some pretty dubious dealings with that seller but I have always got a refund in the end.
