I just recently acquired an M4. For some reason, my DR Summicron will not mount to it.

I cannot find any information on this issue. It seems as though it should mount with no problem.

Am I missing something?

I've been using my M3 with the DR Summi with no problems. That being said, it would be nice to have the option to use it on my M4.

Thanks!

Best, Bing

Hello Bing,

Very strange, I've never seen/experienced this .

Can you put the lens on M4, but can not turn to lock ?

Had you set the focus ring to infinity without the optical close device ?

I've used some DR on all of my M Leica film and digital (which must be set to about 1.5m to mount the lens on digital M),

here with M4

Yes, the lens will go onto the M4 but will not lock.

I had tried mounting it in various ways, one of which was focusing to infinity and trying from there. Unfortunately, I don't even have the goggles so there is no problem there.

Could it be the flanges on the lens itself?

I had also tried mounting it on an M240 with no luck there, although I am not familiar with the digital M bodies, really.

It's different for digital Leica M.

Officially, digital Leica M are NOT compatible with 50mm DR Summicron (see those user's manual).

But as I managed to use my DR on my digital M, cautions are:

- before mounting, set the focus ring to about 1.5m

- on most digital M, focus to infinity is not possible with DR (except M10)

On film M, the setting focus ring before mounting is infinity

OR ...

my thinking with your descriptions :

there must be something wrong with your DR.

Will any other lens mount on the M4, is it possible the mount on the M4 is bent or deformed? What have you been using the DR on, or have you used it on any cameras? I have used DR Summicrons on M3s and M2s, an M4 is no different. I was recently looking for a 50, both DRs I have owned have been great lenses, but not this time as it won't go on my M8. Speaking of the M8 the button for locking the lens was stiff, it took a few lens changes to loosen it up.

Hi guys!

My other M lenses (Summaron 35 f/3.5, 7Artisans 50 f/1.1, and Hektor) all mount to the M4 just fine. Hell, even my Visoflex II mounts to the M4 with no problems. Plus, those things all mount to the M3 with no problem, either.

I have been using the DR on my M3 with no problems at all.

It is just the DR not wanting to mount to the M4.

I have tried mounting the DR to the M4 in various focus positions.

If it matters any, mine is the later DR with both the meter and feet scale.

Both the male bayonet on the DR and the female bayonet on the M4 look unmarred. I am very confused, to say the least.

I had a similar problem a few years ago.

My 90 Tele-Elmarit won't fit the new acquired M3, but it had fit my M6. Also all my other lenses fitted to the M3 as well.

In the end the mount was a bit deformed and the M3 went to repair...
