piblondin Posted December 27, 2019 Share #1 Posted December 27, 2019 (edited) Advertisement (gone after registration) Will I have any problems using Lightroom version 5.6 to import, manage, and edit the DNG files from the Q2? I'm debating whether to get the camera, and being able to use this version of Lightroom is a must for me. Advertisement Posted December 27, 2019 Posted December 27, 2019 Hi piblondin, Take a look here Leica Q2 with Adobe Lightroom 5.6?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
jaapv Posted December 27, 2019 Share #2 Posted December 27, 2019 The last update of 5.6 is July 2014, so the Q2 is certainly not on the list of supported cameras. You may get lucky that it can read the DNG, but it certainly won't be able to handle camera or lens profile. Why is the use of completely outdated software a must? I've had no problems importing and editing the Q2's DNG files in Lightroom 5.6, but I'm not sure if I'm missing out on some essential functionality. (I only took a couple test shots at the store on my SD card.) Basically, once I find a combination of software and hardware that works, I'm inclined to stick with it. OS and software updates have broken too many things--sometimes irreparably as with iOS updates that cannot be reversed--over the years for me. Also, I refuse to play Adobe's or Microsoft's subscription game, so I'm stuck using legacy versions of Creative Suite and Office.
jaapv Posted December 28, 2019 Share #4 Posted December 28, 2019 Well, I am certainly no LR expert, but Photoshop is my thing and I can only say that the last few years have brought quite a few enhancements that are of real use to me - and I find that certain software that I value won't work with older versions of OS. So I don't think that the "subscription game" is some nefarious scam, on the contrary, it works out cheaper than purchasing updates. Not that I ever had to pay for Mac updates. But different strokes for different folks.

I'm on High Sierra on one machine and Mavericks on the other and won't update either one.
jaapv Posted December 28, 2019 Share #6 Posted December 28, 2019 CC 2020 runs perfectly on High Sierra. Anyway, I could not do without Content Aware technology on my Photoshop, for instance..
Vov Posted December 28, 2019 Share #7 Posted December 28, 2019 Advertisement (gone after registration) I believe by being DNG with built in lens profile you should be good to go. I would defer to your testing or another expert, however. On a side note I love that Leica uses DNG. It allows me to use mobile Lightroom without subscription for basic raw edits.

Yes, the backwards compatibility of DNG files is a real selling point for me. I remember waiting for Lightroom and Aperture updates to support the RAW output from some new camera, but that's never the case with Leica and DNG. Leica Guy Posted December 28, 2019 Share #9 Posted December 28, 2019 I’ve been a very long time user of LR and Photoshop. Since LR beta. I too struggled switching over to the subscription based plan. I finally resolved its worth a couple Starbucks lattes cost each month to have the latest features and camera profiles. I too really appreciate the content aware capability in PS. Also many of the latest tools in LR develop module. Especially the straightening tools for making buildings vertical. Different strokes for different folks. I have zero regrets at this point. I did switch out the internal Sata HD in my iMac to an SSD drive and saw a 10X improvement in read / write speed on my 2011 iMac. Earlier this year I upgraded to a new 27” iMac with fast USB-C ports. Love it. The old one still works though. Good luck.
PhotoCruiser Posted December 28, 2019 Share #10 Posted December 28, 2019 Is there no Lightroom Classic ( the standalone version) for MAC? I use that version under Windows and it works great! Chris
Siriusone59 Posted December 28, 2019 Share #11 Posted December 28, 2019 I'm using LR5.7 with a Q and all seems to work fine but I'm sure I don't handle the volume that many of the others do. I did notice that I don't have a Q listed under lens profiles(only M,R and S) so I just use the embedded profile for the camera. So far I've not had any problems with the DNGs as far as reading or editing. Was hoping that Santa would bring me a M10P for Christmas but since he didn't it was probably to save me a few headaches with my outdated software...couldn't be because I wasn't good enough.😒 I'm with you on avoiding subscription based software but I did allow my MacBook to update to Catalina and haven't had any issues...yet. Best of luck with your choices.

I use LTR6.14 (on mac and W10) which has the advantage that this one is 64 bit programmed and thus works on even the newest MacOs (if you installed it before the upgrade). Another advantage is that you can put in the Dehaze plugins !
