Some thoughts upfront.  The combo is quite comfortable to hold because of the new SL2 grip.  AF works well but one has to be patient.  It takes one or two seconds until an object is in focus and one can take the shot even if the cross-hair shows green.  One can see how an object slowly becomes sharper in the EVF.  This is a big relief because initially I thought that AF didn't work.  How does the APO-Macro-Summarit-S 120/2.5 look on the SL2 (it's the only S lens I have)?  See for yourselves.

Why should one use this S lens on the SL2?  Well, for one, reach.  This one here is slightly cropped.

For IBIS if one shoots handheld, needs to stop the lens down, and doesn't want to crank up the ISO too much.  Check out the detail at f/5.6.

But this lens is really a portrait lens.  Is it better than the APO 90 Summicron-SL?  I think it resolves just as much detail without appearing to be uber-sharp.  This was the best model I could find this morning for this MF portrait look. 😁

@Chaemono Does the Rock 'n Roll strap absorb most of the weight, even with S glass?

Cheers, John

It does but I’m afraid that over time the leather will become too stretched and wear out.  I, therefore, only let it support the SL Summicrons and the M lenses, of course.  With the heavier lenses, I often hold the combos by the lens.

Likely it will only be supporting SL2 and M glass for quite a while, but will see how it wears. I can always go back to the Peak Design Slide or Slide Lite anyways.

Cheers, John

Chaemono:

The S 120 may just be my favorite S lens.

While it is a fabulous portrait lens,  I would not consider it to be limited to just portrait use.  Some photos of Alcatraz while I used it on my SL in San Francisco this summer.  It is a stunning lens on either the SL or the S for any intended use.

Regards, Rob

And, some on the SL as a portrait lens.  The bokeh (below) is just amazing. Rob

It’s even better on the SL2, Rob. 😁

Just curious, did you get any indication from your dealer about how long the wait might be?

I have not bothered contacting the dealer. Too much going on with year end and picking up some S lenses. I will stop by in the next couple of weeks and try out my S lenses to whet my appetite (torture myself).  Hoping to also hear about the S3 soon, too.

I'm on the pre-order list for the SL2.

Given how good the SL2 files are, I can’t imagine the S3 files being anything but awesome.  The S3 is not a camera I’m interested in but would sure like to know what that proprietary MF sensor is all about.

Hi folks - I just got the 120mm (non-CS) for my SL2 and it feels great.. found a great deal on a used one..
I find that the autofocus is very noisy! Is this expected? Additionally, the AF seems to take quite a few seconds to nail down pin point focus.. like the original post says, the subject continues to sharpen after attaining focus.. so, gotta wait before snapping that picture. I don't have an S body, so I couldn't tell if the firmware on the 120 I received is already at 4.6.. will be taking it to a local Leica dealer in SF, CA this weekend.

The S lenses have a different AF design, with different priorities. They use a different type of motor, which allows direct manual focus (SL lenses use "fly by wire" focus where the lens elements aren't directly connected to the focus ring). The downside is slower and noisier autofocus. The upside is that the lenses offer better feedback for manual focus.

It probably should not take several seconds to focus unless the contrast is very low or it is in low light. With mine it tends to focus in about 1 to 2 seconds max in daylight. And yes, the motor is louder since it is not using ultrasonic or other quieter, more modern tech. It is using strong and precise screw drives, which work well for the big heavy elements and manual focus, but which are indeed loud.
