Any experience with Lumix 24-105 f4 and 16-35 f4 lenses on an SL?

Recommended Posts

I'll be watching with interest. MY initial thought was to compare the three R Summicrons I have (for my old Leicaflex SL), but in non-scientific testing (same shots etc, at the three focal lengths, Summicrons against the VE24-90) I came away with a glum face. The VE24-90 is by far and away better. No argument.

The Pany 16-35 is smaller though, and "affordable", so the quality side interests me.

I just picked up the 24-105mm lumix for my new SL...(I have a CL & M8/M240 bodies as well). It is a very good lens. Initial comments:

Soft on the edges, firms up in the center line....I find it a grade above the 35mm Art/45mm classic SIGMA lenses I recently bought as well. I think because of the Panasonic/Leica collaboration, the RAW files put of the SL with the 24-105mm look better and a tad sharper.....In any event, it is a tad below my Leica 35mm & 50mm Summicrons on board the SL via the L to M adapter, but for a Zoom lens, quite satisfactory. The weight & size of this Lumix is on par with the large SIGMA 35mm f/1.4 prime, which takes excellent photos but is a portly, oversized lens for what it does.

I have seen other threads here where forum users have put this large lens on a CL, but the balance of the weight wasn't there for me. I got my copy for about $1,100 and thought it was a decent value, particularly for its range (similar to my Pentax K-1 with its 28-105mm lens aboard). I recommend  it

Interesting to know.  Unfortunately I have been travelling with just that since I got the SL2 and left the Leica 24-90 behind so I can't make a direct comparison yet but the Lumix 24-105 is very good as Merv-O also says.  I thin I've posted these pictures before, but thought they are relevant here.  All with an SL and Lumix 24-105

I hope to compare this lens to my Leica R 19mm f5.6 later today, but I agree that (part of) my objective was to find a light multi purpose lens and I do feel that it fits that purpose.

OK, I am not very good at this, but I did try to compare the LUMIX 16-35MM F4 to my Leica R 19mm F2.8; which is viewed as a very good (albeit old) lens.  All photos were taken with my SL at ISO 100 hand-held.  One series is at F4, the other at F8.  I did not do any post processing.  Each series show at full, 1 to 1, 2 to 1, and 4 to 1.  Will do my best to post them now.

I'll take the opposite approach to Danno's as I think he's covered it. I tried just to use the lens and process a result as I normally would. In the end, thats how it will be used and its the final result that I worry about. One from yesterday. The only lens related correction necessary was a bit of CA suppression.  Not much, but there was enough a slight blue/purple tinge in the branches to be potentially distracting. Overall CA is well, just not perfectly, controlled and in this case easily eliminated. Hopefully the shot demonstrates that the lens can deliver a high level of sharpness with little optical distortion in a real world scenario.

SL2 ISO 100 f8 20MM 1/160"

I expect I'll do quite a bit of real wold shooting over the weekend. If I manage an interesting keeper or two with this lens, I'll post them.

It is great to see how lens (and sensor) technology is advancing so much.  Hay, I LOVE Leica glass.  I have a total of 30+ M & R lenses, but I also know that other options exist.  We all need to judge all of them, not by their brand, but by the (style) images we produce with them.  I for one love the ability to 'mix and match', to explore and openly learn.
