Super excited I just purchased my first Leica Q2 Mainly for Stills while I’m on set. I’m a little disappointed in the video features. I know I know this is not a video camera but even my iPhone allows me to make manual aperture and ISO settings. Page 59 says it’s fully automatic. Hope to see any update soon does anyone know why they do this?

Because the real Video-enabled camera is the SL2. Cameras like the Q/Q2 and CL are only meant for Video "snapshots" - at which they are rather good, but certainly not up to professional standards..

i don't think it is hamstringing, every camera is a collection of compromises and design decisions. I think that professional video is simply not a feature that Leica feels necessary to include into what are, essentially, "reportage and travel" type of cameras. The occasional grab video or a talking head are all that are needed. If you want to go out and do serious video, there are other options.

Yes, but there are times when even for quick and dirty video you want to be able to control exposure. In fact one might want this more often in the unsympathetic lighting you may get in amateur situations - the bright window in the corner of the shot , the bright light source you can't avoid in your shot.

I'm just trying to work out if this is purely a marketing decision, or if there is a technical reason why auto is the only option. I can't see that it would be a power consumption or heat control issue.

I totally get its a stills camera thats why I purchased it however why put video in it at all its useless. Im sure its something they could do in a firmware update. I am a cinematographer by trade and own Alexa mini's I wouldn't use this in a professional setting however its one of those things why have it and cause problems for the stills folks if its useless.

I can confirm that the Q2 is a great camera for taking pictures but very bad for video. I just did some test yesterday.

You cannot control anything, just hoping that the camera's software will choose the good settings, and on that point I can confirm that in great contrast light/dark situations, the Q2's choices are not accurate with burnt light zones, the other HUGE problem is the rolling shutter.

As long as you don't move at all, quality is good but if you try to tilt or do any panoramic movement, the rolling shutter is huge, meaning that the image is shaken. If there are letters such a store ones, you cannot read them any more when doing any pan.

I was hoping that the Q2 could be at least of help in case that my main video camera had a problem but you can forget about it.

I think that video with a smartphone is of better quality.

I have never bought the Q2 for videos but only for pictures and I am FULLY happy with it on that point, the best camera I ever had.
