SonbomaBear Posted November 8, 2019 Share #1 Posted November 8, 2019 Advertisement (gone after registration) After two years of GAS I finally am getting my SL in the morning. I’ve been collecting M glass which I use on a Canon R mirrorless. What is the best quick study on using this amazing interface? Everything will be manual focus M lenses. Curious as to getting lens info into EXIF. Canon is clueless. I shoot manually on my Q with Av mode and auto ISO. Exposure Comp with back dial. Perfect for my mind. Any suggestions? Will 6 bit code show in EXIF with Kipon adapter? if I have to sell my Q, which 28mm do you prefer! 🐻

RoySmith Posted November 8, 2019 Share #2 Posted November 8, 2019 Welcome to the forum and to the SL. The 6 bit code on M lenses will only be read by the SL if you use the Leica adapter. With a non-Leica adapter you’ll need to manually select the lens. This works for M and R lenses. The 28mm Summilux-M works extremely well on the SL. I also have the 28mm Summicron which is not quite as good. Sean Reid at Reid Reviews has excellent data about this, but you need a subscription to read the articles

I use the latest incarnation (eg http://www.slack.co.uk/leica-m-resolution.html), and it is very fine on the SL.

Actually without the Leica M-Adapter-L you cannot manually select the lens. If you can buy an SL or SL2. Make yourself a favour by buying the real deal. Other brands adapters do not worth it. They have too many compromises. Leica makes sure of it. Not fair play at all. But it is the way it is.

I can't recall ever having looked at the manual, except to try and understand some of the more obscure options. The interface is mostly intuitive and after half an hour you will have got the hang of it. Think long and hard about the functions you usually require and set the customisable options for the buttons to make them easily accessible. Create some profiles with the appropriate settings for auto/manual/low light etc. as needed so they can be quickly changed..... or to reset things you have changed temporarily. After a week of messing about you should have a customised camera that does everything you want in the way you want with the things you need easily accessible. I'd second buying the official M-L adapter as it gives full functionality. Anything less is pointless. As for 28's ....... avoid the older versions of the 28/2 as they don't perform optimally on the SL. Edited November 8, 2019 by thighslapper

I was tempted to trade up to the newer “more digitally friendly” 11672 version, but purchased the Summilux instead. On the M9 the smaller size of the Summicron is preferred but on the SL the size of the Summilux is quite nice - as I’m sure you know.

But it is the way it is. I only have the Leica Adapter so I stand corrected. The SL will apply in-camera lens specific software correction for Leica lenses but only if the Camera recognizes the lens (with 6 Bit coding or by selecting the lens from the menu). If a non- Leica adapter will not permit this then the images will not have this correction applied. One can add the lens used to the EXIF file afterwards but the opportunity for In-camera lens specific software correction will have been missed. SonomaBear Posted November 13, 2019 Share #8 Posted November 13, 2019 Thanks to all! The SL is beautiful — maybe I’ll sell the Q to buy a 28 ‘Lux
