CVickery Posted October 25, 2019 Share #1 Posted October 25, 2019 Advertisement (gone after registration) I understand that the Sigma MC-21 mount adapter is not compatible with the SL at the version 3.5 firmware level. Is this still true with the version 3.6 firmware?
Advertisement Posted October 25, 2019 Posted October 25, 2019 Hi CVickery, Take a look here Leica SL (601) and Sigma MC-21. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
michali Posted October 26, 2019 Share #2 Posted October 26, 2019 Yes it's true for vers. 3.6 as well, the Sigma MC-21 doesn't work. It only works with the Lumix S1 & S1R. For my Canon 400mm f/4 DO IS II USM lens on my SL, I purchased the Novoflex EF/SL adapter which does work. Best, Mike
michali Posted October 27, 2019 Share #3 Posted October 27, 2019 The only way to use the MC-21 on a Leica L mount camera is to put some masking tape over the contacts. I do this on safari, when I have the 90-280mm L Vario Elmar mounted on my SL, and mount the Canon 400mm on the CL (for extra reach), via the MC-21 adapter, and use it in manual focus mode. As far as aperture goes with this set up, it's in the hands of the gods, I have no idea what aperture it's shooting at. Welcome, dear visitor! If you want another aperture, you have to remove the lens while pressing the preview dof-button on a fully working system. The lens will then have the aperture of the remove lens. SonomaBear Posted November 13, 2019 Share #6 Posted November 13, 2019 I also am disappointed by not being able to use the MC-21 on my SL... don’t care about AF and usually shoot wide open. so I just ordered a cheap passive adapter from China for all my EF lenses. Makes me concerned with Sigma and their lenses. If they can’t get an adapter working on SL why should I trust much larger expenditures for ART lenses? The dumb adapter is the only way to go, unless you purchase the Novoflex EF-SL adapter, which works OK'ish with most Canon lenses, but apparently not all. For my wildlife work I use the Novoflex adapter for my Canon 400mm f4 on the SL. Leica doesn't offer anything comparable on the long end, not even a tele converter for the VE 90-280mm L 😡. See my posts #2 & #3 above. You're OK with Sigma L lenses on the SL they do work really well. I have the Sigma 45mm f2.8 L, AF and other functions are seamless and equally as fast as with my Leica L lenses on the SL. I suspect it's Leica who have blocked the Sigma MC-21 adapter from working, not Sigma. Leica probably has some kind of arrangement with Novoflex for their adapter to have "sole operating rights" on the SL. It's extremely frustrating and makes a mockery of all the L mount alliance marketing BS that they feed us. SonomaBear Posted November 13, 2019 Share #8 Posted November 13, 2019 Thank you ... I’ll buy a 45 f2.8 for street and children, use my M and EF manually!
michali Posted November 13, 2019 Share #9 Posted November 13, 2019 Good choice, the Sigma lens is inexpensive, great for general photography and has an aperture ring which I love. Have a look at this review: Sigma 45mm f2.8 L on SL Best, Mike
