sinjun Posted October 20, 2019 Share #1 Posted October 20, 2019 Advertisement (gone after registration) Having recently had a 50mm summarit f/1.5 and collapsible summicron serviced, with elements recoated, I thought I'd do a quick comparison with a Zeiss sonnar-C and summilux ASPH. I'm not normally one for testing but I set up a target and used a tripod-mounted Sony A7s, Kolari thin filter modified. I did this rather than using my trusty M9 so I could be certain I was getting the focus correct - using zoomed-in EVF. I must say I am impressed by the summarit considering the age of the design. Whilst it is of lower contrast and shows a fair amount of glow at f1.5, centre sharpness to my eye is quite reasonable. At f2 it is a little better than the summicron and arguably better than the sonnar - I know the latter is based on an old design but for my purposes I'm treating it as a modern lens. The sonnar is, however, better at the edges than the older lenses. Of course out of focus rendering is another matter, with the old lenses showing what some might consider objectionable or distracting structures. The summarit has a hard-edged arc on the side of each blurred element opposite the centre of the picture which can create a swirling effect if there are many such elements behind the plane of focus. In the summicron at f2 is even more distracting than the summarit at the same f stop. However, in the right circumstances in my view these effects can add favourably to the overall character. Anyway, I shall post comparison pictures below. If my energy holds out I will also post some pixel-level crops. First, the summarit at f1.5. Welcome, dear visitor! UliWer Posted October 20, 2019 Share #8 Posted October 20, 2019 Starting with the Summarit 1:1.5/5cm via the first version of the 1:1.4/50mm Summilux to the later version of the Summilux (non asph) you'll see a constant progress as far as contrast and smoothness of bokeh is concerned. The later versions are not completely different compared to the Summarit - though they are better. With the Summilux asph you'll see a leap forward in all respects.

sinjun Posted October 20, 2019 Author Share #10 Posted October 20, 2019 Sonnar is current version for the M. Now some crops. First summarit @f1.5: Welcome, dear visitor! UliWer Posted October 20, 2019 Share #16 Posted October 20, 2019 Did you alter the contrast in post processing for any example?
sinjun Posted October 20, 2019 Author Share #17 Posted October 20, 2019 That's all. Sorry for all the pictures. I won't bother with Summilux, which is already excellent at f1.4, or with other lenses at smaller apertures. 1
sinjun Posted October 20, 2019 Author Share #18 Posted October 20, 2019 There was no post-processing other than resizing the full images, and whatever default sharpening the Iridient software applies. So no contrast or colour modifiction.
tjv Posted October 20, 2019 Share #19 Posted October 20, 2019 Man, I miss my collapsible Summicron... C Sonnar looks good to me too, though. All of these lenses do. Lux ASPH is maybe a bit perfect for my tastes however. Which is good, because I could never afford one.
