pikovsg Posted October 14, 2019 Share #1 Posted October 14, 2019 Advertisement (gone after registration) For those that prefer optical over EVF, have you been able to find a matching optical EVF for the Q? I've tried a few 24mm and 28mm, but the view is a bit off. Trying to find an ideal solution.

wda Posted October 15, 2019 Share #2 Posted October 15, 2019 An add-on optical finder will always be a bit off cf an EVF. It is optically displaced. For sheer accuracy it is worth learning to get the best out of an EVF.
danielmfrank Posted October 16, 2019 Share #3 Posted October 16, 2019 I got the Voigtlander metal 28mm metal brightline viewfinder in black from CameraQuest. It's very compact and seems to work well. According to the site it has been discontinued along with the plastic version, and it doesn't look like they have any in stock anymore. CV seems to be pushing the extremely tiny 28/35 Mini-Finder as a replacement. FWIW, here is the descriptive copy from the Web site: January 2003 saw the introduction of a new all metal 28 brightline High Point brightline finder. It is a great 28 brightline viewfinder, bettered only by the much more expensive Zeiss Ikon 25/28 finder. . With its High Point design, all the corners are easily seen by a person wearing glasses. The fit and finish of the metal finder is quite high. Like most wide angle finders, it has no manual parallax compensation -- but it does have parallax compensation marks in the finder. The lower dotted brightlines indicate the approximate view at about 3 feet. The upper solid brightlines indicate the approximate view at infinity. It looks like you can special order the Zeiss finder at the usual places, for almost $400. There are used copies of the CV finder around for less.
Herr Barnack Posted October 17, 2019 Share #4 Posted October 17, 2019 (edited) I'm getting a Q2 soon and have been thinking of getting a hotshoe mount viewfinder. I'm thinking it might be a nice alternative to the electronic viewfinder under some circumstances, even if it is not as accurate as the integral EVF in the camera. On the other hand, using the EVF will save me the $895 a new Leica brightline external mount finder would cost. RoySmith Posted October 17, 2019 Share #5 Posted October 17, 2019 The Q2’s EVF is really fantastic. I suggest waiting till you have the Q2 and see the EVF yourself before purchasing an external mount OVF.
Herr Barnack Posted October 17, 2019 Share #6 Posted October 17, 2019 (edited) How strange - my wife is suggesting the same thing. 🙄 Edited October 17, 2019 by Herr Barnack
danielmfrank Posted October 17, 2019 Share #7 Posted October 17, 2019 Advertisement (gone after registration) TBH, I bought the optical viewfinder before my Q2 was delivered, but haven’t used it yet. One problem is that I have to choose between the Thumbs-up and the viewfinder, since there is no cold shoe on the thumb rest. Next time I go out to do some pre-focused street photography, I may give the OVF a try. The good news is, it’s incredibly tiny, so it’s easy to keep with me in case I decide I’d like to use it. The Zeiss is over $500 cheaper than that, if you can’t find the Voigtlander.

Leica Guy Posted October 18, 2019 Share #10 Posted October 18, 2019 I’ve often wished the Q/Q2 had an optical / EVF like the Fuji X100 cameras. I especially like that camera and implementation. The best of both worlds.
Rick G Posted May 7, 2023 Share #11 Posted May 7, 2023 My issue with the Q viewfinder is that I can't wear polarized sunglasses. The screen blanks out. A separate optical viewfinder would be the solution to that problem.
jaapv Posted May 7, 2023 Share #12 Posted May 7, 2023 Any of the 28 mm optical finders for the hot shoe would do the trick. The alternative would be to wear non-polarizing sunglasses obviously https://www.ebay.com/b/Voigtlander-Camera-Viewfinders/167930/bn_2442114
