T00m Posted October 2, 2019 Share #1 Posted October 2, 2019 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi, I'm experiencing a problem with a iMac 27" 2019 internal Card Reader: - I have various Lexar Professional Cards with 32GB, formatted with M10 or Q2 which are working with the reader. - I got a new Lexar Professional 256GB Card (633x, 95MB/s same series as the 32GB Cards) which is formatted with M10. M10 is able to write and read files/photos from it but the iMac internal Reader not. macOS is showing the card but isn't able to read the files from it. When I use a USB-C -> SD Card Adapter and connect it to the iMac the card can be read as well. Doesn anyone experience such issues with the internal iMac SD Card reader? Advertisement Posted October 2, 2019 Posted October 2, 2019 Hi T00m, Take a look here iMac internal SD Card Reader doesn't work with large Cards. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
jaapv Posted October 2, 2019 Share #2 Posted October 2, 2019 Two solutions 1 Use a sane size of card 2. Just use your reader.
andybarton Posted October 2, 2019 Share #3 Posted October 2, 2019 That's a lot of shots to lose if that card goes TU. Far better to use multiple, smaller cards, IMHO. Have you checked out the Apple forums for a solution?

ramarren Posted October 3, 2019 Share #8 Posted October 3, 2019 (edited) My computer at present is a 2012 Apple Mac mini. It reads and writes to any card I've put in it ... SD, SDHC, SDXC, anything from 1Gbyte to 128Gbytes. It's been absolutely reliable and faster than even the Sandisk or Lexar USB3 readers I have. My most-used cards now are 64 and 128 Gbyte capacity. Be sure you're up to date on macOS and any firmware revisions your system might have needed have been done. Any 2019 Apple computer with a built in card reader should be able to match or exceed what my 7 year old Mac mini can do unless it actually has a defective card reader. If you can't get it to work right, it might be wise to schedule an appointment at an Apple Retail Store and bring it in for hardware diagnostics. A 2019 iMac should still be under warranty, even if you didn't buy AppleCare. G Edited October 3, 2019 by ramarren
Exodies Posted October 3, 2019 Share #9 Posted October 3, 2019 I have had two SD cards fail to mount on my older iMac. They worked fine in the camera but at some point they failed to appear on the desktop. I uploaded the photos to an iPad and retired the cards. fatihayoglu Posted October 3, 2019 Share #10 Posted October 3, 2019 Worth to format the card with SD card formatter and see if it helps. I have had problem with my SD cards as well and a format solved the problem. Don't forget to re format when you insert in the camera. I also recommend to use a external card reader as I find inserting the SD card into iMac is not very efficient, the card can be angled hence damaging the pins etc. I use an external SD card reader, on the desktop, easy to reach etc. My iMac is late 2015 5K
jaapv Posted October 3, 2019 Share #11 Posted October 3, 2019 Apple advises to slide the card in quickly and firmly, if you do so slowly it may not be readable. (???)

It's a matter of simply making sure that the card cage contact fingers make a good electrical contact with the card's contacts. I just jam the card in the slot, it always works fine. JHall Posted April 19, 2021 Share #15 Posted April 19, 2021 I just experienced the same issue with a new iMac 21" 2021 running Big Sur 11.2.3. I tried two Lexar Professional 64GB cards and both were recognized by the computer, but the images could be read. I tested two other smaller cards (ScanDisk 16GB and Fuji Film 32GB) and they worked fine. What's odd is that the Lexar cards worked fine in my 2013 MacBook Pro also running Big Sur 11.2.3. Apple Support was unable to fix or even understand the issue. I guess will will have to use an external SD card reader going forward for the larger cards. Keith (M) Posted April 25, 2021 Share #16 Posted April 25, 2021 The card slots in neither my 2017 iMac nor ditto MacBook both running Big Sur will recognise the 64Gb. Lexar I use in my A7III. Had to buy a USB card reader thingy. Both computers work fine with cards of <=32Gb. (The 64Gb Lexar has an extra row of contacts).
Simone_DF Posted April 26, 2021 Share #17 Posted April 26, 2021 I have a 256GB card and it works fine with a 16" 2019 Macbook Pro
