So I'm having some GAS, for a WATE.  Not sure why, I don't do a lot of wide angle photography, I have the Zeiss 18/4 that I just started playing with more now that I have live view with the new M10-P.

Tell me what you love/hate about the WATE?

Thanks

Lawrence

@Lawrence,
sold my WATE to fund an M10-P partially.
On a previous M8.2 I found it too clumsy in handling together with the needed 67mm-UV/IR-filter and the big "Frankenfinder".
Without filter the front lens is only little protected by the lens hood.
But even on an M-10, where I could test it for several times, it is IMHO somewhat 'over-engineered' and too sensitive for my outdoor activities like walking and mountain hiking.
It might be better for me to decide only for one extrem wide-angle focal length (21 or 18mm) to keep the M small and handy.

WATE is a wonderful lens.

If you don’t use the frankenfinder live view and EVF are just fine. If you have other wide lenses the frankenfinder is a benefit as well.

Its a nice sharp lens, built well.

I got a WATE because my beloved Super-Angulon 21/3.4 would not allow light metering on my M6, MP and M10 (without Live View). I use it mostly at 21mm, coupled with a 21mm finder.

It is wonderful, enables me explore wider perspective, but although not being heavy, it is a large lens.

I say go for it! I too had the 18 Zeiss and it is a great lens. I’ve always been a super wide guy and have always had a 21.

I did a report on it for the LHSA Viewfinder

Idhrads,  The WATE is a superb lens.  I use to own one until the SL 16-35 arrived on scene.  GAS is a terrible addictive condition that affects many photographers.  The only cures known by myself are either one goes out and purchases the lustful lens or have discipline and simply go out and shoot, shoot, shoot with what one already owns.  Then after a month or two ask after practicing and mastering the lens for your genre of photography consider this aspect.  In your case, the Zeiss 18mm lens, ask;  Do you really, really need the WATE or simply want it?  I suggest too if you look at your hundreds of photographs taken with the Zeiss 18mm lens, you will discover that you really don't need or want the WATE after all and you will find yourself cured.  That is, until the next lustful lens or camera comes along and you relapse and then need another stint in rehab.  Last, it will get down to your lustful desires vs discipline to work hard with your existing lens.  I don't envy you, but ultimately I would suggest you will save yourself a lot of angst and stay focused on the creating fine photographs with meaningful content with your most excellent Zeiss lens and save yourself some money as well.  Ultimately, only you can decide what is best for you.  r/ Mark
