I recently got a near mint Leica M3 that I adore, the only thing is that the lever likes to squeak a lot when advancing the lever.

Was wondering if anyone can offer suggestions on what to use to solve it? It's hard to justify sending it out for CLA at the moment to address just a squeaky lever...

Thanks!

It could be a symptom of the need for a CLA, do you know the service history?

Unfortunately not. Only that it's been kept in near mint condition and was bought for use but didn't find much action. It's a model from 1963, and from the wax seal looks like it was CLA'd at least once since production. What other symptoms should I be paying attention to that a CLA would address? Like I said, it's hard to justifying mailing it out for a CLA at this moment for just a squeaking lever if it shoots perfectly fine.

If it was a bit beat up with some obvious wear or an unkown history it would be a different story.

The only time you need a CLA is when the camera is broken, and in the majority of cases the only time the camera is broken is when it needs a CLA. It is the same work for the camera tech whether it is precautionary or for example the result of the shutter speeds misbehaving. So like a car, if you are going on a long journey you have work done that is precautionary, just like you would on your Leica if you are going on a photo expedition. You have to decide if a squeak is a fault that will affect the photos, but as it's a 'new' camera I'd use it a lot and if it has faults manifest them all in one go so you have a list of faults and examples for the tech to grapple with. And if you can't find any, other than a squeak, then you are clear.
