hirohhhh Posted August 30, 2019 Share #1  Posted August 30, 2019 (edited) Advertisement (gone after registration) I want to make a custom protective case for my SL equipment that includes: SL Body APO Vario-Elmarit-SL 90-280 mm Lens Leica Vario-Elmarit-SL 24–90 mm Lens Summilux-SL 50mm f/1.4 ASPH I tried to trace images I found online into vectors but it's far from accurate. I tried to measure my equipment and create vectors into Illustrator, but I'm afraid it's not gonna be 100% accurate when I get the finished product. So I though the best solution would be if Leica can provide the official vectors (they certainly have them). I'm wondering if anyone here created their own custom case foams before and can share their experience? I tried Pelican and HPRC. Pelican has their own web app for creating custom foam, but it's kinda hard to create it based on tracing photos in the web browser (I have a feeling it's not gonna be as accurate as I would it like to be). This is basically what I'd like it to looks like: Welcome, dear visitor! As registered member you'd see an image here… Simply register for free here – We are always happy to welcome new members! Lens hoods included would be nice too, but it's hard to find accurate images with the hoods. Even these are not accurate when I compare them into Illustrator with the real dimensions. The aspect ratio is always 1-2% inaccurate comparing to the real lenses. So I cannot rely on these images found on the internet - I need real, official vectors. hirohhhh Posted September 7, 2019 Author Share #5 Â Posted September 7, 2019 Hey, thanks all. I bought 1555 Pelican Air Case with TrekPak and it's amazing. Definitely more versatile than foam.
99p Posted September 8, 2019 Share #6 Â Posted September 8, 2019 I'm looking to do something similar. I'd love to see photos of your case/kit if you have any.
hirohhhh Posted September 9, 2019 Author Share #7  Posted September 9, 2019 Advertisement (gone after registration) Ok, sure. So, since I use this case primarily for lenses and camera, I want only the clean things inside, not the one that are usually dusty all the time. So I have: Three lenses: 50mm, 24-90 and 90-280 SL body 5 batteries and charger (below the camera strap) Profoto Air Remote, Lumu light meter and few other small items I left the large area on the right side undivided so I can arrange things as I need them. At the moment I have some Profoto grids and gels, lens hood, filters, cleaning kit, cables and small accessories like card readers, dongles etc. I have a spare TrekPak dividers if I decide to add them or change the current layout, but they are pretty cheap to buy new ones if you need it. Welcome, dear visitor! As registered member you'd see an image here… Simply register for free here – We are always happy to welcome new members! I also have four B1X lights and lots of modifiers and c-stands, and I hold them into backpacks and large SKB boxes, and I would like to consolidate it a bit into a fewer large Pelican cases, but it might not be the best idea as I frequently change those things (buy new stuff and sell or give away what I don't need anymore), so I'll see. hirohhhh Posted November 19, 2019 Author Share #8 Â Posted November 19, 2019 By the way, what's your experience with this case while traveling? Do you have to check-in, or you can carry it with you. Although it's very protective, I'd hate to check-in this bag. My last bag was lost and never found. Airline compensated me with some money, but not even close the value of the stuff inside. You might look at the Pelican 1615 Air with the yellow padded insert, it's a little easier to re-configure if you're adding/dropping gear. Contrary to what's at the end of this URL, it's not a carry-on, but it has wheels and meets most specs for a checkable bag, so long as it's not overweight: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1244898-REG/pelican_016150_0040_110_1615_air_wheeled_carry_on.html I've only flown with it a couple of times, but it survived both trips well. According to what one gate god told me, Alaska Airlines assumes that any Pelican case contains firearms, and they give it careful treatment (have to pick it up at the oversized bag counter, etc.).
