Guest stnami Posted September 15, 2007 Share #181 Posted September 15, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Not suprisingly long landscape threads produce a lot of postcard type of images. Quite understandable as a lot is about memory and what one liked. Too many people feel that all they have to do is point and shoot get the reading right .Most good landscape photographers will study the light over a period of time before they shoot, eventually it becomes intuitive and know what will work................sometimes it's a matter of....... hey that's fantastic too bad it won't translate photographically. The more successfull guys/gals spend a heap of time understanding the lie of the land its physical properties as oppossed to relying on purely visual aspects. Too much point and shoot and emphasis on the camera here. apity as potentially it could have worked

Jack_Flesher Posted September 16, 2007 Share #182 Posted September 16, 2007 I agree with you imants. But I don't think just because an image is a postcard and not a wall-hanger, doesn't mean it can't still be enjoyed at some lesser level. When I head out for serious landscapes, I try to plan as best I can. I'll use sun charts so I know times and directions and can estimate where and when shadows might fall throughout the day. Doesn't always work as weather plays a significant role too, but I try... Here is a shot I planned specifically around times the shadows I wanted would be cast --- unfortunately I never did not get quite the sky I had hoped for my version of Teardrop Arch, but this was the best one during the week I was there: But then sometimes, you are where you are when you're there and have to make do with what you get --- usually the best I muster is an occasional postcard grab shot... Here is a shot of Lake Louise --- I was there for a morning only and took away what I could, a poorly-lit postcard : And then sometimes I head out for a day of fun with the camera, only expecting postcard grabs, and get lucky with lighting or weather or both. A quick trip to Yosemite Valley for a morning shoot revealed this: Cheers,

M6J Posted September 16, 2007 Share #185 Posted September 16, 2007 Luzern and Interlaken - 21 asph Very nice pictures Matthew. I noticed though, that they all lean to the left a bit. It looks like you tried to make one main line on the left vertical and so the rest of the picture leans to the left. These pictures are made with a 21mm lens, so they do have distortion, which should either be corrected or equalized at both sides.

vic vic Posted September 16, 2007 Share #192 Posted September 16, 2007 jack.... i think imants was talking about "poscards" in terms of photo-content and photo-style......... now if u take "poscard pics" (like those u posted) and put them in photoshop into the litschy frame as though it is hanged on wall - that will not make the pics "non-kistchy-poscard" ) hahah so funny besides.......... what are those frames and all the decorations........ what is it u are some nice cute old grandmother that attneds decoration workshops to spend some free time in fun with freinds and to socialize there ??? ))

amedick Posted September 18, 2007 Share #196 Posted September 18, 2007 Jack, I really like your images, and I feel the images are really brought out on the web with the frames. Did you custom design these frames, or are they a standard template from a photo editing program??? Thanks, and keep the strong landscape images coming, gives me something to aspire to..... Thanks John. I generate those frames with a photoshop action I bought from Fred Miranda several years back. However I hacked into it and edited it to create this one with a slightly different look than you can get with his stock set. Cheers,
