Good point .... I've been living in the expensive wide angle R world for awhile so I'm excited about any potential solutions that don't involve a price tag like the one that involves purchasing a 15/2.8 and 19/2.8 R. I'm willing to give up a few stops for an all-in-one solution. I'm guessing Leica would have to offer a separate auxillary finder?

That‘d be a safe bet.

Interestingly enough, this potential new Tri-Elmar, although probably explicitly designed for the M8 (in order to give its buyers the feeling of a 21etc) would, above all, enhance the versatility of the traditional M system. Nice marketing argument

Yikes! I can only begin to ponder the technological challenges in designing and building a lens like this, monster that it would need to be

Doubtful. Leica is already investing big heaps of cash in both the M8 and new 17mm fixed optic; they may not have much left over for a Wide-Tri-Elmar.

Even if they did, I further doubt it would have a maximum aperture of f2.8, More likely f4 which would make it even less attractive for us.

We'll see...

I was told by a guy at Samy's that there'd be a 17mm for the M8. Period. That sounds reasonable. I've seen a couple of people try to float a wide Tri-Elmar rumor, but I think it's **really** unlikely. The thing would be bigger than the camera...If there were one, it might be $2600, but it'd be $2600 for each length; $2600 x 3. The 17mm, depending on the speed, will be close to $3,000 all by itself, I suspect (remember, there'll be no used market to pull the price down.)

I have always shot Nikons (and now Leicas as well) and when the D1x and D2x first came out, there was this kind of unrealistic speculation which was then used to bash the camera when it did appear ("The camera will be unusable unless it has noise free 3200," "The camera won't be competitive unless it's full-frame," etc., followed by, "We were told to expect a noise-free 3200 and I can see noise at 800; we were told to expect full-frame and they deliver 1.5 crop. I wouldn't touch this camera with a ten-foot pole.")

I hope this doesn't start with the M8. I believe it's going to be excellent in its own terms (and have pre-ordered) and I would be sadddened by efforts to diminish it with unrealistic speculation and rumors.

Maybe it'll turn out to be true and maybe it won't. We'll just have to see. But, you can be assured that I'm not the kind of person who floats rumors just to stimulate innane babble....or to denigrate a company or brand. Personally, I'm very much invested in Leica as I have a DMR and a large investment in R and M lenses. I'm very much looking forward to Photokina to see what overall direction the company is moving.

I find the speculation as to what may be introduced very interesting.

An acquaintance tells me these photos are genuine.

Two questions:

1) What's the square opening beside the VF glass?

2) Will there be two versions, one with and one without crop factor?

Usual Mark hobby-horse, I think if you select 16 on the lens you should select 16 on the finder and get the correct frame; Andy thinks it's OK for the owner of this ~$4000 combo to have to remember to allow for the crop factor and select 21 instead when using a digital body.

Personally, I'd like the finder to detect what sort of camera it's on - film or digital - and adjust accordingly using for example, a lug on the hot shoe. Otherwise, there could be a manual switch or interchangeable eye-piece to change the finder magnification.

Finally, as HC suggests, there could be "film" and "digital" models. Black and chrome as well?
