As I wrote in posts #5 and #7,

- in my decades of use, the device never broke on my many Ms

- only when "push to limit" (environment dust, very hot/cold weather or mounting lens without care), it can stuck but released after that

- this case is broken or lost spring, so different

I'm a little freaked out now, how sensitive are these hellicoid follower things?

Never had a problem with the helicoid in almost 15 years of use on a M8 (still get it) and then on a M240.
I think it is just a matter of bad luck, like when you buy a car.

The focus follower in the camera has a fairly strong return spring to push it out against pressure from the lens - your situation is the first time I've heard of that particular part of the camera jamming. And that's with about 20 years of using them myself and following forums such as these, plus a previous (almost) 30 years "observing" Leica M use from the sidelines.

Obviously it can happen (it happened to you!), but I'd put the likelihood at probably less than 1 in 10000 - or I would have heard of it before.
