John McDade Posted August 5, 2019 Share #1 Posted August 5, 2019 Advertisement (gone after registration) Could someone advise me? I've been using a Voigtlander 75mm f2 on my SL, with an adapter for M mount, and then the adaptor for the SL. When I press the shutter release, a message comes up saying 'Unknown Lens' and it wants me to do something, and this happens repeatedly. The shutter does fire, and I've been getting good photos, but the message interferes with the business of taking the photo. I've also used a Zeiss Sonnar M mount without problems, so I can only think this has something do with the lens being originally a screw mount lens. If anyone has had this problem and solved it, I'd be grateful for your advice. Many thanks!

jaapv Posted August 5, 2019 Share #2 Posted August 5, 2019 No it has to do with the adapter not being coded. The camera does not see the lens at all. Code the adapter for a Leica 75 mm lens.
sleepyhead Posted August 5, 2019 Share #3 Posted August 5, 2019 I agree with Jaap, and can also add that if you have a LTM adapter with a “cut-away” section (originally designed so as not to interfere with the infinity lock found on some older lenses), then the 6-bit sensor on the camera mount may get confused by some light leaking in from the side of the lens mount and the camera may keep thinking that you have mounted a new lens. I have experienced this with one LTM adapter with a cut-away.

yourdeelight Posted June 25, 2024 Share #5 Posted June 25, 2024 Would it be possible to hear what the solution is! I am using the Leica L to M adapter plus another Leica screw adapter.. and the SL2 flickers and the unknown lens alert comes up then also starts flicking through all the available lens options quickly and becomes caught in this loop. This happens with any uncoded lens.. and happens less oddly when not in the car. When in the car (driving) the whole flicking becomes far more regular and intense and the whole evf image flashes when the alert is not present. Help! This camera has the latest firmware. All contacts cleaned etc

I skip the whole coding thing and use a LTM-L adapter. Most LTM lenses don't have corresponding codes anyway. I can recommend the Kipon L39-L because it is milled to clear the infinity lock. Any good-quality adapter will work if your lens doesn't have an infinity lock.

All contacts cleaned etc Which screw adapter do you have, and is it coded? You might try a Rayqqual Type III adapter and code it: https://shop.cameraquest.com/leica-screw-mount-adapters/rayqual-24/35/135-6-bit-coded-leica-screw-mount-type-iii-leica-screw-mount-lens-to-leica-m-body-adapt https://shop.cameraquest.com/leica-screw-mount-adapters/rayqual-28/90-6-bit-coded-leica-screw-mount-type-iii-leica-screw-mount-lens-to-leica-m-body-adapter/ https://shop.cameraquest.com/leica-screw-mount-adapters/rayqual-50/75-6-bit-coded-leica-screw-mount-type-iii-lens-to-leica-m-body-adapter/ This guide assumes you have an M lens - with a screw to M adapter it's much easier, as you don't need to do anything directly to the lens: https://www.devonbuy.com/how-to-6-bit-code-leica-m-lens/
