Yes, good to see, also a doubling of R&D expenditure which bodes well for the future.

Detail here: Leica Camera AG - Investor Relations - Annual Reports

hmm, I think you will find that is mostly money spent on 'launch support' for the M8....

The origonal German version contains a more detailed breakdown (rangefinder cameras and lenses 55% up, compact cameras 132% up), but says nothing about the R&D expensiture. Turnover from the rangefinder product portfolio makes up about a third of total turnover, and is being caught rapidly by digital compact cameras.

A condition for this is however, that

especially the reorientation of the product portfolio and of the

restructuring concept will be continued as planned.

This, of course, is the crucial sentence in the report....

err, yes, but what does it refer to?? end of R9, intro of R10? general march towards digi-compacts?

It means that the employees have to suffer more and more... it is a warning, that they don´t have even to think of more income for the future. And this sentence keeps on the fear of loosing the job - modern psychological pressure-methods of nowadays slavery.

Maybe one of the "new methods" of Mr. Lee, who is going to import US-economic mainstream-bullshit in a worldfamous factory of nearly 100 years of tradition.

come, come Dirk,

less of the pessimism please!

After all, the mainstream economic model says forget everything else and focus on (Panasonic) digi-compacts as they are doing better than everything else, Leica arn't going to do that now are they? are they??

The poor translation to English, combined with MBA-speak, does make it difficult to gather the meaning. But in the context of the rest of the announcement, I take it to mean that in order for Leica to reach their intention of profitability over an entire fiscal year, and ever-increasing profitability beyond that, they must continue to invest in R&D and strengthen their digital competence (moving firmware development in-house, for example). This is what we've been seeing for the past several quarters, and it finally seems to be bearing fruit.

Jeff,

a bit like an M8 firmware update, we are left to speculate as to the actual meaning.

Reading the German version (issued 10 days earlier than the English one) that particular sentance has a rather different meaning. My translation would be 'we would like to point out that the restructuring of Leica Camera AG, and associated companies, is not yet complete, and that restructuring process still contains risks'. Curously the German document is quite different from the English one, in terms of content rather than translation accuracy. It contains breakdowns of turnover by market region and so on that do not appear in the english version.

Interesting that the tone and content of the German language document is different. I know in this day and age that any sort of document can be obtained by almost anyone, but who is the target market for financial releases of this sort? Investors presumably? In that case, perhaps one could take the language as a warning that "we will need to continue to make investments (spend) before the restructuring is complete, and this will impact the amount of net income in future quarters". In other words, what is best for Leica's shareholders may not be what is in the consumer's best interest. Long-term, we both benefit from the company's survival and profitability. But we know the the short-term pressure for profit does not always lead to proper investment in the future, or proper treatment of employees. So maybe a shareholder warning of this sort, combined with the positive financial news, is the best possible combination for customers.

Just a thought.
