First Leica... Q-P

Well, I was fortunate to spot a 2 week old Leica Q-P come up for sale on eBay that came with the shop receipt, B+W UV & ND filter plus 2 high speed 128gb cards for £2999. Unregistered so I'll be the 1st official owner 🙂

I have a couple of A7riii's for work with a selection of GM glass and decided I'd sacrifice one camera and a lens I don't use for this camera. Later in the year, when the A9ii comes out, I'll add an A9 to the fold... that should give me greater variation rather than having two of the same.

First impressions... very good. I was pleasantly surprised at how quick it focuses and the feel of the camera is amazing... the lens, wow... wide open it is sharp from centre to edge and the falloff in the out of focus areas is so smooth. I wasn't sure when I first bought it as to whether I'd be happy enough with the speed of focusing and function to actually sell one of the A7riiis but, so far it feels like I needn't have worried... just eating for eBays "Sell for a Pound" offer 😂

And... I was able to pair it up with my Luigi black and red leather strap with peak design attachments. It feels like a perfect match!

One question... is it possible to change where it zooms into when using "Zoom + Focus Peaking" or does it always go to the centre? Probably have loads of other questions over time but this one jumped out as I've been enjoying manual focusing with it. Thanks

It always focuses to the center. There’s hope though. The latest release of firmware for the CL enables moving the focus and zoom position. I hope it makes it to the next Q2 release.

Thanks... it would be a useful addition but for now, it’s not the end of the world to switch it over to peaking only. 
 

love the close focusing on the Q... it’s one of the things I love with the Batis 40. The sharpness of the q at 1.7 is really impressive... puts a big grin across the face 😬

On moving the zoom/crop area;  Wouldn't it be a lot easier to just crop the desired area in post?  I don't normally use raw, but if I understand correctly, when you shoot both raw & jpg on the Q, the raw file is still the whole frame, and the crop mode only shows up on the jpg.  I know that in my case, when I process for prints, I change my mind a lot as to the final cropped image.

You will love shooting with this camera, after 40 years, it made me look forward to finding things to shoot.  Have fun with it!

Ahh.... the issue wasn't about moving zoom or crop area, it was about being able to change where the manual focus zoom assist points to.

At the moment it always zooms in to the centre but if you want to focus on something near the edge of the frame, you may not be able to see it when it zooms in to the centre of the image. The inly way around it for now is to change to focus peaking only, which may not be as accurate but, it does allow you to see the outside  edge of the frame.

I had not run into that before, but then I'm still learning the finer points of this camera.  I see what you mean now.  Whenever I have used the manual focus, I just focused and re framed, so I never paid much attention to it.

Exactly. Try doing serious macro photos where you want to be 6X magnified and accurately focusing on a very small area. Really difficult currently. If you center the image and focus, the focus distance can change slightly as you re-position.

+1 Thankfully focus peaking on it's own seems fairly good but it would be so much easier if you could zoom in on the area you need to focus on when in macro.
