Thank you, Ecar, Certainly the day light has an important influence on the overall result of the photos, in my case , I remember , most photos were taken in the afternoon or around sunset. As a standard film in those days I used the Fujicolor 100, it was dirt cheap in the 10 pack, occasionally for low light I took the the Fujicolor 400, the Fujicolor 200 I never used. All the old photos shown in this thread originally were printed in the size 20x30cm, kept for around thirty years and only recently scanned with a plain Canon scanner, certainly with some loss of color and resolution. I still keep the films, but they are somewhere in boxes in the basement or attic... greetings, Andreas 1
AndreasG Posted August 1, 2019 Author Share #25 Posted August 1, 2019 (edited) Today, temperature in Tokyo around 38 C and 90% RH, nevertheless I happened in the late afternoon to put together another three "matching pairs": First, this is a small kind of tunnel, very close to the Shibuya Station, as an underpass of the Yamanote Line, pretty narrow, but apparently open to the general traffic, illuminated inside, new guard rails.. in the background, a Mercedes Benz from the time... around 1989 Welcome, dear visitor! AndreasG Posted August 1, 2019 Author Share #26 Posted August 1, 2019 Today, around 30 years later, it looks pretty different. The guard rails are gone, illumination too, the place is used as a parking lot for bicycles, against payment of course. If you doubt, it is the same tunnel, compare the fixtures on top at 12:00! It is the same tunnel! Welcome, dear visitor! AndreasG Posted August 1, 2019 Author Share #29 Posted August 1, 2019 Another ten minutes walk brings us to the Meiji Dori (street) and Omotesando street crossing, in midst of the fashion district for the younger generation at least, in the past, looking like here, see the "old" cars! michali Posted August 1, 2019 Share #31 Posted August 1, 2019 (edited) Wonderful series and a great effort in putting this together! I lived in Tokyo from 1972 to 1975, and finished high school at the American School in Japan (ASIJ). This brings back many fond memories, especially your last 2 images above. Friends of my parents lived in the apartment building on the right (intersection of Meiji Dori and Omotesando), we visited them often. We lived not far from there, in Harajuku. AndreasG Posted August 2, 2019 Author Share #33 Posted August 2, 2019 Before I go on with the presentation of matching pairs, let me share with you some background. All the old film based photos I made 1987-1991 during my first stay in Japan, my second stay began 1996 and is still going on... As cameras I used and still keep a MP-4 with a Leicameter and two M6 bodies and lenses of 21, 28, 35, 50 and 90mm focal length, with 28, 35, 50 being my favorites. The 90mm I used seldom, the 21mm almost never. Around 400 photos, kind of "best", I printed out in 20x30cm and kept them in boxes, some of them wer framed and displayed for many years in a large medical clinic, certainly not the best condition to keep the colors fresh. Only a couple of months ago I opened the boxes again and enjoyed "old Tokyo", which I share with you now. I also keep the films still, somewhere hidden in boxes in the basement or attic, therefor, I had to make scans of the old photos first. Welcome, dear visitor! AndreasG Posted August 2, 2019 Author Share #34 Posted August 2, 2019 (edited) And finally, as kind of proof that I really was there, a rare photo showing me with my wife in Kamakura, around 1989/1990 in the temple area of the famous Great Buddha. In my right hand I keep the M4-P, probably with an Elmarit 2.8/28 v3. Meanwhile, my hair turned grey and people say my perimeter changed somehow... AndreasG Posted August 2, 2019 Author Share #37 Posted August 2, 2019 (edited) One more, the famous Takeshita Street in Harajuku, a playground to develop fashion ideas and concepts, if it works here, it gets expanded in Japan and later globally. AndreasG Posted August 2, 2019 Author Share #38 Posted August 2, 2019 Now, today, the photo confirms that the Mc Donalds left side still exists, some other buildings as well, but the overall impression is more friendly, clothes are in brighter colors, and the hairs got dyed into various shades between red and "blond".... apart from the high rising building in the background. AndreasG Posted August 2, 2019 Author Share #39 Posted August 2, 2019 (edited) In those days, this particular Mc Donald's kept an outdoor area with tables on the street with a beautiful background painting, 50ies styles motor car, guitar player inside, and a young boy leaning against the wall (I apologize for cutting his feet...)
