Popular Post AndreasG Posted July 27, 2019 Popular Post Share #1 Posted July 27, 2019 (edited) Advertisement (gone after registration) A couple of weeks I posted this photo already in another thread of this forum (my apology), it shows a simple eating place under the railway tracks near Yurakucho station in Tokyo, where thousands of such places do exist. The photo I took around 1988 with a M6 or M4-P with a Summilux 1.4/35 lens, in those days a typical available light photo, with the Leica glow based on the Mandler lens. Welcome, dear visitor! By chance, today I passed there again, around 30 years later, and fortunately I got a camera with me...., but not as in 1988, however with a M10-D and 2.8/28 Elmarit, so I cropped the photo a little to make the aspect somehow comparable to the "old" photo. Not much has changed, the signboards are more or less almost identical, illumination more on the cool side, the old pink dial phone right side got replaced by an air conditioner, the electricity meter upper right still exists and the ceiling apparently never got cleaned the past 30 years... Kirin beer is still served. To be honest, I prefer the atmosphere of the old photo, was all its shortcomings, the new one clearly shows the possibilities of digital imaging, but I feel, even with more image "information", something got lost. Let me know your opinion, please. Edited July 27, 2019 by AndreasG Correction 21 3
 Simply register for free here – We are always happy to welcome new members! Advertisement Posted July 27, 2019 Posted July 27, 2019 Hi AndreasG, Take a look here Tokyo - Then and now. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
icon80 Posted July 27, 2019 Share #2 Posted July 27, 2019 Agree - much prefer the old photo. It seems much more atmospheric. Wonder what would happen on the digital image if you used a very high ISO setting? Thank you for this interesting comparison.
AndreasG Posted July 28, 2019 Author Share #3 Posted July 28, 2019 Here is another photo I took 30 years ago with a M6 on film, just across the Sumida river in Asakusa, Tokyo, see also my thread "Tokyo Waterways". AndreasG Posted July 28, 2019 Author Share #4 Posted July 28, 2019 (edited) Since I was not sure about the location, google helped me, and I had some time left today, I found the place again.... I could not get however close to the original point due to construction on the bridge, but you easily can recognize the details of the catenary wiring and the old stones river embankment, now replaced by concrete walls. The buildings are gone, the concrete pillars continue... Welcome, dear visitor! AndreasG Posted July 28, 2019 Author Share #5 Posted July 28, 2019 Another example of then and now, the famous and traditional Takashimaya Department Store in Nihonbashi, Tokyo, the Imperial Family shops there! AndreasG Posted July 28, 2019 Author Share #6 Posted July 28, 2019 (edited) And today, almost nothing has changed, building, even the red Toyota taxi, now with aluminum rims... that is tradition.. Sparkassenkunde Posted July 29, 2019 Share #10 Posted July 29, 2019 (edited) I really like this series and the effort you have put in it. Your pictures make me want to travel to Japan once more. I had the chance to visit Tokyo in 1998 only and since then I wanted to go there again, but never managed it so far. But slowly I get the impression, that my wife gets accustomed to my thoughts and I can hopefully make travel plans in one of the next years... AZach Posted July 29, 2019 Share #11 Posted July 29, 2019 Thanks Andreas, this great series brings up so many memories and familiar feelings from Tokyo, I lived in Shibuya-ku 4 years during the 80`s. Definitely still my favourite megalopolis in the world.

Apart from that: a very interesting serie. Edited July 29, 2019 by otto.f
AndreasG Posted July 29, 2019 Author Share #13 Posted July 29, 2019 (edited) Thank you for all your kind comments, I try to continue this series. I still keep many old photos, the challenge is meanwhile to identify the location, and then, to have sufficient time - I need to do a job here... AndreasG Posted July 31, 2019 Author Share #15 Posted July 31, 2019 Meanwhile I succeeded to arrange more "matching pairs", here is the place on front of the Denenchofu station, in southern Tokyo, where I once lived more than 30 years ago, In those days, a prestigious location. AndreasG Posted July 31, 2019 Author Share #16 Posted July 31, 2019 Now, 30 years later, the flowers are gone, the German Bakery as well (I never have shopped there), but the set of buildings seems to be unchanged. I need to admit, there is more green! Welcome, dear visitor! AndreasG Posted July 31, 2019 Author Share #17 Posted July 31, 2019 This is the street in Denenchofu 3-3-15 where I lived with my family 1987-1991. Left side a little distant, you see the rear of a car, reaching into the street, that was my wife's little Honda Civic. Welcome, dear visitor! AndreasG Posted July 31, 2019 Author Share #18 Posted July 31, 2019 (edited) Today, the street scenery is calm as ever, but many new houses have been built, my old home disappeared, but the street markings are virtually the same... Seems, even the transformer on the electricity pole is the same as before. Welcome, dear visitor! AndreasG Posted July 31, 2019 Author Share #19 Posted July 31, 2019 (edited) Let's go to Aoyama, the fashion district. At the crossing of Aoyama-Dori with the prestigious Omotesando street is a police station, a so-called "Koban-Box", hmm, 30 years ago... Welcome, dear visitor! AndreasG Posted July 31, 2019 Author Share #20 Posted July 31, 2019 Well, 30 years later, the Police Station is almost unchanged - Government property, no funding -, I guess the air in the bicycles' tires got renewed occasionally... and, it is only three bicycles...
