Try to get the Samsung 215 tw (1680 x 1050 px). Excellents colours and brillance.

 

I have the older 213t and want to point out that you cannot calibrate brightness when the DVI interface is used. You have to switch to an analog connector. Not sure if this is true of their later models, but it's worth checking.

I've had a Samsung 226BW, a 22" LCD for the past couple months, to augment the 17" display on my notebook, a Sony AR. I like the Samsung alot, it was inexpensive (around $350US), has a 3000:1 contrast ratio and one of the fastest response times (2 millesecond) of any display, useful for video/gaming. It's probably not as accurate as some of the more expensive monitors mentioned here, but more than sufficient for my amateur needs. I see they also have a 24" version now available, the 245BW which is a 1920x1200 display.
