rfunnell Posted July 9, 2019 Share #1 Posted July 9, 2019 Advertisement (gone after registration) Does anyone have any further information regarding the Leica Fotos App and GPS functionality for the Leica Q2. I currently have what I think is the latest Leica Fotos app version 1.2.0 . When I asked several months ago about when the ability to record GPS metadata from the App to the camera I was told 'to be patient'. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks Ross

rfunnell Posted July 11, 2019 Author Share #3 Posted July 11, 2019 Thanks for the heads up . I remember last time the App doesn't automatically update you have to delete it from the phone and then re-install. On doing that I was able to install Leica FOTOS 1.3.0 Just about to go and test ..... will report back .
rfunnell Posted July 11, 2019 Author Share #4 Posted July 11, 2019 No joy with the new app Leica FOTOS 1.3.0 being able to provide gps metadata at this time .

evikne Posted July 11, 2019 Share #6 Posted July 11, 2019 I tested just now with remote and without. But I can’t see any gps data. I think the app can only read gps data when a camera provides it, not write.
bullmoon Posted July 11, 2019 Share #7 Posted July 11, 2019 (edited) Advertisement (gone after registration) I just tested this using Leica FOTOS 1.3 and I get GPS metadata (shows up in Lightroom and the FOTOS Gallery downloaded shots) in both DNG and JPG when using FOTOS Remote. Unfortunately, it is only in conjunction with FOTOS as stated in the manual: "This function is available only as long as the camera is connected to the Leica FOTOS app (see p. 129)" I have the Q2 set with Bluetooth on. I see the Bluetooth and GPS indicators in the LCD lower right before I connect with FOTOS. And while the camera is connected, it cannot be used normally to shoot, only with FOTOS Remote. This seems like a tripod/landscape sort of feature as using a phone remote otherwise is not so handy. I hoped being in proximity to the phone with Bluetooth on would be enough to get GPS from the phone, but no. At least usually. I have two pictures this morning where it didn’t work, but fifteen or twenty where it did. Whether you use Fotos for the download doesn’t matter. Krusty Posted July 11, 2019 Share #9 Posted July 11, 2019 I managed to shoot at least 1 photo which contains GPS data. The photo was shot with the camera directly and not via photos.app. But i cannot reproduce it. The Bluetooth and GPS Symbols in the finder are grey and not bright white. I know that they get white when there is a connection, because i saw this once... The thing is, that there is no permanent bluetooth connection to the iPhone. Bluetooth seems only to be used to trigger the start of the WLAN Hotspot and as soon this happens, the camera and the app are connected via WiFi. Jared Posted July 12, 2019 Share #10 Posted July 12, 2019 I found that if I take an image using Fotos, then disconnect, the satellite icon will remain brightly lit for a couple or three minutes and I can take pictures directly with the camera and still get GPS data. But the first picture must be taken with Fotos. And the satellite icon only remains bright for a short while after disconnect.

Maybe then the Bluetooth connection is disconnected.... there Must be a way to keep the connection while photos.app is not used.

rfunnell Posted November 21, 2019 Author Share #13 Posted November 21, 2019 Almost 1 year since the Leica Q2 was launched and no GPS functionality has anyone had any joy with this ?
Matsaly Posted November 21, 2019 Share #14 Posted November 21, 2019 No joy whatsoever. Don't know if the just released Fotos Version 2.0 will address the GPS functionality issue. Hope the Fotos 2.0 app is not just a ploy to generate revenue off of the "Pro version". See my separate post on the Fotos 2.0 update.
