You mean your PC doesn't add thumbs.db, desktop.ini or  $recycle.bin ? :p

a) Windows 10 does not do this (thumbs.db, desktop.ini), can't remember if $recycle.bin is settings dependent now, but certainly my PC does not create it on SD cards. I get zero hidden files unless you count the volume information files.

b) earlier versions of windows do this as soon as you navigate around a card, regardless of where they were formatted so if you camera is allergic to these then you need to never [put the card in the PC.

Likewise when you put a card in the camera, it'll add every folder it needs if it is not there.

Where you format the card (PC vs camera) makes no difference once it has been inserted into both except for block size; larger block-sizes are faster with bigger files but waste space on smaller files so it would make a lot of sense for a camera to pick a higher value than windows default, but this should not (and in my experience, over 20 odd years and probably as many different cameras, has never) caused a crashing/corruption type issue.

Whatever else, i have been formatting cards on my Mac for over a decade, and yes, those hidden files are there. But  they have never, ever, caused problems in any camera I owned. What did cause problems was the use of cards formatted in another camera. For instance the DMR would die at frame 27 for this reason. This is the most common cause of problems like these.

As a majority of photographers use Mac computers for obvious reasons, the forums should be packed with complaints about these files causing trouble. They are not.
