That's a bit wider than I remember from the 70s and 80s! :)

Yes, the canal is now wider than as late as 2012.  (And in some places there are two parallel canals to compete with Israel.)  The Egyptian government has declared that approximately 1 kilometer from the water's edge on each side of the canal is now under military control and ownership.  So there is now a relocation effort underway moving the once small individual and wonderfully charming fishing villages out.  The government has simply driven a bulldozer through houses and farms.  They are also in the process of building a three to four meter wall on each side.  Btw, some think the canal has a system of locks but actually there are no locks.  With only a sea level difference between the Red Sea and the Mediterranean Sea of less than one meter over the 130 mile canal, there is no need.  Interesting and very historical place.
