Hi,

I am in a bit of a dilemma.  I have been looking for a Q2 here in the UK and every big outlet including the 2 official Leica stores in London tell me that I would have to wait between 3 to 6 months to get one.

A few days ago I called the London Camera Exchange in London asking for one and they said they did have one either.  A day later they called to say that they have a secondhand Q2 but I said that I wasn’t interested.  Today, a few days later, I got a call from them again to say they have a brand new one in.  This sounds a bit too good to be true.  How do I know they are not trying to sell me the same secondhand one as new?  Is there a way I can check?  I can’t remember if my Q came sealed.

Any help is much appreciated.

Thanks

So my understanding is there is no way for the consumer to see the shutter count as this is hidden in the OS and only Leica service can have access. With that said the camera has been in very short demand so it would seem the camera even if used would have very little wear.

As long as you have full Leica warranty (which you should have) I do not see a concern.  I have purchased several Leica cameras and none of them were sealed in a tamper-proof way.

Good luck to you.

Cheers

Thank you for your response.  However, if the camera is slightly used then they will be charging me the price of a new one instead of a used one

The used price for a Q2 right now is at least 20% ABOVE retail. So if they’re selling you a used one at the new price, you’re getting a discount :)

The Q2 doesn’t come in some sealed packaging - you can take it to the Leica store and see if they can check shutter count for you during the return window.

That’s a great suggestion, thanks

I would inspect the camera very carefully looking for ANY blemishes. I would then operate the camera in all modes taking photos and looking at them to ensure no problems. I’d ask for a 72 hour return for full refund if you’re not happy with anything. Unless you see some obvious damage, likely the camera is fine. Make sure you have the warranty clearly spelled out so you’re covered if anything does pop up. The Q/Q2 have leaf shutters in the lens and as far as I know has never been a problem area. Then, enjoy the Q2. Its a terrific camera.

  • 1 month later...

My Q2 was taped shut on the outside plain cardboard box - tape that was UNDER the sticker for the serial number.  Pretty obvious that it had never been opened.
