I have noted the term “CRF” employed when discussing Leica cameras - film and digital. Edwin Puts is a big fan of the term.

But what is the real meaning? “Camera Range Finder”?

Anyone know?

Coupled Range Finder.

It’s mostly irrelevant today and a throwback to the olden days when a lot of cameras had built in rangefinders that weren’t linked to the focus mechanism so you had to read the distance then set it on the lens.

Here is my offer for C.R.F.

As 'earleygallery' states ' Coupled Rangefinder ', but as the name implies such are coupled to the focusing mount of the camera and all the lenses made for it.  Well, perhaps not all; some very early Leitz lenses and the very long focus lenses designed for use with aids such as Visoflex or PLOOT; several 'third party' manufacturers lenses..  Typically the Leica screw mount two's and three's; the M2, M3, M4, M5 and M6 also  The Contax, Nikon and Kiev  Rangefinder  'look-alikes'.  There are many more.  Be aware that some 'Modern Digital' cameras have a 'manual focus' facility which uses the principal of the C.R.F. in the Infra-red auto rangefinder built in to the camera.
