Bjoernyy Posted May 14, 2019 Share #1 Posted May 14, 2019 Advertisement (gone after registration) I am thinking about to buy a Leica Q2. Mainly (95%) I take photos of my playling and moving 1 year old son. Is the AF fast and good enough? How good is the face detection AF in this regard? Advertisement Posted May 14, 2019 Posted May 14, 2019 Hi Bjoernyy, Take a look here Leica Q2: Is the AF fast enough for kids?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Leica Guy Posted May 14, 2019 Share #2 Posted May 14, 2019 AF is fast and accurate. I don’t know about face detection. I’ve heard Sony is better. The Q2 is a fantastic camera for shooting kids. Peruse the forum and you’ll see a wide variety of shots. Good luck.
ramarren Posted May 14, 2019 Share #3 Posted May 14, 2019 I don't know: I don't let kids use my cameras.
TrickyMrT Posted May 14, 2019 Share #4 Posted May 14, 2019 I have the Q2, spot focus is ok. If you use face detection focus you will be disappointed. In low light, the Q2 is not doing a good job. For kids, I use the Sony A7R III which is much faster and the eye detection does an amazing job. In terms of Autofocus Leica is 5 years or more behind his competitors. Sony is a game changer.

Forget about face detection, I use spot 100% -tk
pico Posted May 14, 2019 Share #7 Posted May 14, 2019 Advertisement (gone after registration) The local child protection agency forbids me to shoot children ... with a tranquilizer gun. What can I say I like still lifes. Quote
paul.bridges.3388 Posted May 14, 2019 Share #8 Posted May 14, 2019 Sony has far better AF IMO. Even my 4 year old RX1RII has EYE detection far superior to the Q2 (hit and miss) FACE detection. Don't get me wrong, the Q2 is a lovely AF camera....but for critical AF shots, the Sony trounces it. Tho' I suspect laser precision AF isn't the priority for the average Leica buyer. dancook Posted May 14, 2019 Share #9 Posted May 14, 2019 On a Sony the tilt screen is also good to take photos from their level. I'd still use the Q2 though, because it's more fun

Sony's face recognition will easily snap on to the kids, shot from the hip. The Sony can be a fun package that way and is less intimidating. The Sony is also the only full frame camera I can smuggle into gigs. I've got some great concert footage this way. I'm packing it for an overnight trip in Dublin. Disappointed at this...wanting to practice the Q2. But I find the Q2 handles better with the Leica grip, which makes it almost twice the size of the tiny Sony. Add the large Leica battery charger and I'm falling back on the Sony for this trip. Edited May 14, 2019 by paul.bridges.3388

Half the size of the Leica charger.

Bjoernyy Posted May 15, 2019 Author Share #13 Posted May 15, 2019 Thank you all for your feedback. The opions aren't clear. So I will wait until my local Leica shop has the Q2 in stock and I will buy it and test the Q2 by myself. Maybe the AF is good enough, the Q2 will stay, if not I will stell it and keep my 24/1.4 GM. I think you’ll find that AF on the Q2 is still good enough. Just not quite industry leading. Other aspects of the Q2 performance compensate for this, IMO.
