M10 eyepiece removal, anyone?

My M10 eyepiece is collecting dust— I’ve read a DIY cleaning is fairly easy. 

I am able to remove and reinstall the rubber ring, and also remove / reinstall the 3 screws in the bezel.

I have been told that once the 3 screws are out, it is simply a matter of prying the bezel off the back, which is held in place by two sided tape. 

Can anyone confirm this?

Has anyone done a DIY cleaning?

Agreed, but if this is going to be a regular issue, and it CAN be done fairly easy at home, I would rather.

Also, DAG has enough of a workload that super fast turn around is not assured.

I always call DAG first to discuss the requirements and to ensure his availability and timing. He’s always met or exceeded expectations. Never needed a return visit for any issue.

i doubt simply removing the viewfinder eyepiece will solve your problem.  while you will be able to wipe off the dust on the viewfinder with the eyepiece removed, any other dust that has migrated into the top cover will remain, and is likely to reattach itself to the viewfinder (and other optical surfaces) in due course.

You're better off removing the entire top cover instead so you can blow all the dust out.

For the record, I went ahead and tried it, I can verify-- remove the rubber ring, remove the 3 retaining screws, and the eyepiece is held in place by double sided tape.

5 minute job to remove, clean, and reassemble.

What about the tape. Did you re-use it?

I didn’t photograph the procedure, but the tape is extremely thin, and remained on the back side of the bezel when I removed it. I simply returned the bezel back into correct position and the tape still adhered to the camera. I then reinstalled the 3 screws, and finally replaced the rubber eyepiece.

The eyepiece is stuck hard on its place and I afraid of making a big scratch if using pry tool. Did you use any tool or bare hand to remove the eyepiece?

I used a flathead precision screw driver, and pried— I almost gave up, but then heard the unmistakable sound of the tape peeling away.  It isn’t for the faint of heart, if you can fashion a plastic piece, or wood, maybe that would provide some level of protection....

Plastic pry tools can be purchased many places these days, as they are required for battery replacement on mobile phones.
Ifixit sells kits with them online.

Got it! It seems simple but hazard to make a scratch in the camera body. I will get a plastic tool to try.

BTW, where did you get the replacement for eyepiece? I learnt from here that some guys did get from Leica for free. Isn’t it?

I didn’t replace any parts—I placed the original parts back in place after cleaning.

Seems quite strange to me that dust ingress can be an issue.

From Leica's M10 advertising copy: "protection against light showers, dust and bad weather is provided by special rubber seals"

I wonder how the dust gets into the eyepiece?

Blower brushes used to clean the sensor is where the dust comes from. People imagine dust either on the sensor or lurking in dark places just disappears when blown around under great pressure, it has to go somewhere and as it's already inside the camera why not stay there? Cue 'I've never had a problem...' lol

thanks. I'm too lazy to clean my camera guts so don't have a blower ….or a noticeable dust problem
