septo Posted April 28, 2019 Share #1 Posted April 28, 2019 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have a new Leica Q and want to try B&W photography. Is it better to shoot Raw and then convert or to shoot JPEGs in Monochrome mode. Also, if I go the JPEG route, are those photos just in-camera converted raws or true "raw" black and whites? Advertisement Posted April 28, 2019 Posted April 28, 2019 Hi septo, Take a look here B&W with Leica Q. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
jaapv Posted April 29, 2019 Share #2 Posted April 29, 2019 Always better to convert from raw, provided you do a proper conversion and don't just desaturate. As the camera has a Bayer sensor, there is no "true B&W raw" Only cameras with a monochrome sensor will provide monochrome raw files.
Tobers Posted April 29, 2019 Share #3 Posted April 29, 2019 If you shoot RAW + jpeg, you can set the camera to shoot monochrome jpegs so what you see in the viewfinder, and what you see in the jpeg images, is monochrome. This helps you compose and look for effective contrast, light, shade that are so important in mono images. The RAW file will be in full colour and you can convert it in whatever way you want in post.
