Guest Essemmlee Posted July 25, 2007 Share #1 Posted July 25, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) 1997 version, not coded - what should I pay for it? Are there any issues with this lens? Thanks
Advertisement Posted July 25, 2007 Posted July 25, 2007 Hi Guest Essemmlee, Take a look here Noctilux F1.0 located. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Guest Essemmlee Posted July 26, 2007 Share #2 Posted July 26, 2007 178 views and no responses. That's not normal for this educated and erudite bunch of advisors to the M8 fraternity. My disappointed is matched by my inability to be able to judge the value of the lens which is in supreme condition.
andybarton Posted July 26, 2007 Share #3 Posted July 26, 2007 How much do they want for it?
Guest Essemmlee Posted July 26, 2007 Share #4 Posted July 26, 2007 A grand sterling
stunsworth Posted July 26, 2007 Share #5 Posted July 26, 2007 Given that the lens sells for £3000 or so new in the UK, I'd be very, very careful. Is it a dealer or an individual selling it. Maybe the lack of response was due to the question being posted in the M8 forum.
Eoin Posted July 26, 2007 Share #6 Posted July 26, 2007 Take their arm off as well, LOL It seems very cheap, I'd expect to pay £1400 - £1800 for a clean copy. Are you sure it's a legit deal, can you view the lens before you buy?.
Guest Essemmlee Posted July 26, 2007 Share #7 Posted July 26, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) It seems legit (doesn't everything when you want it badly) and I can see it and test it before buying. It's a private seller.
stunsworth Posted July 26, 2007 Share #8 Posted July 26, 2007 The person selling may not realise how much the Nocti has risen in value since it was bought. I bought mine new in 2002 and paid around £1500 if I remember correctly. It could be that the seller's very pleased with himself because he's getting more or less what he paid for it in 1997. Seeing the lens in person would be the best bet IMHO.
guidomo Posted July 26, 2007 Share #9 Posted July 26, 2007 Leica lens prices depend on many many things. Type of lens and condition of course which is difficult enough to judge. But then there's always a bonus if papers and/or box come with it (matching S/N?). Crazy but that's the way it is. I think you left too few information to comment. But I would say for what you have now told us the price is rather at the lower end of the scale.
Guest Essemmlee Posted July 26, 2007 Share #10 Posted July 26, 2007 I'm not sure what more info I can leave. The lens was made in 1997; I have the serial number; it is in better than mint condition; it is boxed with it's original leather case and instructions; there seems to be nothing amiss. Is it worth travelling the 250 miles to see it?
stunsworth Posted July 26, 2007 Share #11 Posted July 26, 2007 Not sure how it could be _better_ than mint <grin> Seriously, for this amount of money I'd consider travelling - assuming you don't know the seller personally. As mentioned earlier the price is low. In fact it would be low even if the lens came without a box, case etc. This is my only concern and the reason I'd want to see/try the lens in question before handing over the cash. If the lens is ok, then you've got a bargain.
carstenw Posted July 26, 2007 Share #12 Posted July 26, 2007 Is it worth travelling 250 miles to avoid a potential problem? I would go there, and check it for focus shift. There is more to a lens than the exterior... 1000 pounds is very cheap for this lens. You might also contact Leica and ask if the serial number is okay. Guest Essemmlee Posted July 26, 2007 Share #13 Posted July 26, 2007 If focus shift is an issue could Solms sort it?
guidomo Posted July 26, 2007 Share #14 Posted July 26, 2007 I'd say if the lens really is in this good a condition then the scenario Steve has described above is the only conceivable reason he would be selling it so cheap (or are you a charity organisation?). In other words, if he sounds like he has not much clue about the current market (or even inhereted the lens), go for it. If he sounds like a regular trader I would be very suspicious. Solms can shim a lens.
GMB Posted July 26, 2007 Share #15 Posted July 26, 2007 I'd say if the lens really is in this good a condition then the scenario Steve has described above is the only conceivable reason he would be selling it so cheap (or are you a charity organisation?). In other words, if he sounds like he has not much clue about the current market (or even inhereted the lens), go for it. If he sounds like a regular trader I would be very suspicious.. Couldn't agree more. The key is to approach any deal with common sense. The price seems to be too good to be true, so you should be cautious but not reject the deal right away. I bought mine under similar circumstances right at the time when Leica had increased its prices. After several calls with the seller I concluded he was honest and was looking for a simple, smooth transactions rather than maximising revenue on the lens he had inherited. I paid and got 3 days later a Noctilux which, as far as I could tell, had never been used (it was still in the original plastic bag withing the leather bag). I was happy and I think the seller too! But, unless you pick up something in person, there allways is a risk that you wire a lot of money to someone who then disappears. In any event, good luck

Guest Essemmlee Posted July 27, 2007 Share #19 Posted July 27, 2007 The deal is done, and money has been handed over, but rather than drive on a busy holiday weekend (queues everywhere round here - I live in Devon) we both agreed the postal system would provide an adequate means of receipt. I'll stick the first shots on here - honest. Thanks for waiting............
