ron777 Posted April 6, 2019 Share #1 Posted April 6, 2019 (edited) Advertisement (gone after registration) I just received a Sony XQD card for my recently acquired Panasonic S1R, and realized that I do not have a reader for that media. Any suggestions for a good XQD reader that offers a USB 2.0 connector? I use an older Mac Tower that, while maxed out in terms of RAM and computing power, is still USB 2.0. I know, that makes it a dinosaur, but I am not in the mood to install a 3.0 card. Addendum: Following some research and favorable reviews, I placed an order for the Sony XQD/SD Card Reader. Yes ...... it appears to be the only one that isn't a chinese knock off of dubious performance. It is lightning quick .... but it would be nice if it had a different cable option (USB-C) as every time I buy another device it comes with yet another variety of connector.... Like the cards it is really very difficult to justify the price though ..... Edited April 6, 2019 by thighslapper

But I have to say that, for the 24 hours that I've owned the S1R, I am very happy with the basic functions. I have yet to try anything exotic, but the primary setup was easy, despite the moans and groans from others in re the menus. It feels good in hand, and while it is a tad heavier than the SL—by specs— it doesn't feel so. In fact, it is actually less tiresome to hold and the buttons fall right where your fingers expect them to be. I'm afraid that my SL will be gathering dust, as I suspect that it will not be worth very much on the resale market. Anyway, my dialog has veered off topic, so I will say no more. jrp Posted April 6, 2019 Share #4 Posted April 6, 2019 My cheap Chinese (£14) SD + XQD + usb3 usb-c dongle pulls in pics to my MacBook Pro at 185mb / s (with copies to an external SD drive). Half the supposed speed of the xqd card, but good enough.
Ingo Posted April 7, 2019 Share #5 Posted April 7, 2019 The easiest/cheapest solution is to connect the S1R directly to the Mac via cable. I also have a Sony MRW-E90 XQD SD Card Reader which works fine.
ron777 Posted April 7, 2019 Author Share #6 Posted April 7, 2019 I'd guess that's an option, but it doesn't fit my workflow. I prefer a card reader that allows for more room at my PP console. I fear the a camera sitting off to one side of my desk is an accident in the waiting.
grahamhoey Posted April 11, 2019 Share #7 Posted April 11, 2019 Advertisement (gone after registration) I prefer to first transfer the RAW files to my ipad particularly when travelling. The ipad I have has the USB-C input. I then save the images to lightroom which backs up for me. The card reader I have is the Sony Model MRW-E90 which when connected to the ipad with a USB C cable transfers the images from either the SD card or the XQD card. I bought the Sony reader plus a USB to USB-C adapter from B&H. Works with both iPad and iMac.
