Hello Leica Q/Q2 Forum

New to Leica, and recently become a Leica Q-P owner (of course I bought my Q-P two months before Leica Q2 came out.....but totally in love with my new favorite camera nonetheless)

Anyhoo, has anyone experienced the lock button on the focus ring not really 'locking' in AF mode?  This has become a somewhat annoying issue for me.  Is there a way to fix it myself or do I need to have it repaired professionally?

Welcome to the forum. You will find lots of helpful advice willingly given. Your question suggests that once clicked into the autofocus position the focus ring is easily dislodged accidentally. I have the Q and have never found this. It is always necessary to press in the small button before turning the focus ring and returning it to AF positively locks it in place. Assuming you purchased it new a few months ago I would suggest this should be looked at under guarantee.

A QP should still be under warranty. I have not read of a loose lock button, so ask your dealer to get it fixed quickly or get a loan camera if you have photographic commitments.

Thank you for your advice, gentlemen.  My thanks would have been offered earlier if not for the apparent one-post-per-24 hours rule for newcomers.

Agree it is likely an issue that will be covered under warranty and will take steps accordingly.  Seems it's not a common problem.  In any event, I appreciate the help.

Yes, welcome!

The other newbie rule is that you must post at least 10 high quality photos before engaging in the most important topics of all: favorite camera bag and whether or not to use a UV filter.

It happened to my Q unfortunately late 2015 when it was around 6 months old.

Leica replaced the entire lens assembly, and also wanted me to pay EUR 1,400 as there was a scratch on the bottom plate which they said invalidated the warranty. The repair took 5 weeks or so. My dealer didn't want to know so I had to arrange the repair myself.

Hemlock, if scratches invalidate the warranty, I am in trouble!  I am not one for treating photo stuff preciously like a first newborn....I mean I don't abuse it, but my new baby does have its fair share of body dings already even after a short (but remarkably fun filled) couple months of ownership.

5 weeks or so for repair?  Is there a <groan> emoji?  I'd really rather not have to revert back to my old rig now that I have a sweet Leica.  Good thing I don't shoot professionally even though I feel like one using the Q!

I note there is another current forum thread regarding Q focus ring warranty/repair work- I am hoping my service experience will be better.  Fingers crossed.

bags27, those adult topics are way too controversial for me.  I will steer clear- thanks.

@Lunaclick  Good luck !

PM me directly if they do try to charge you, and I'll let you know who I contacted to get the repair cost reduced (but not waived). It's just conjecture on my part but I suspect there's a design issue with the M>AF focus lock in that the lock detent is too shallow or the return spring isn't strong enough. It's not a serviceable assembly so the entire lens assembly has to be replaced which is expensive.

As mentioned already before, I am also using the 'Leica Leather Carrying Strap' #18575 and it is far superior and feels better than the original strap which comes with the Q. You can adjust the length and it has leather protectors for the rings. I'd highly recommend it.

I know it’s been a while now... but how did this story end for you?

My brand new Leica Q-P has this out of the box ... I tried the Q and Q2 in the store and remember the AF lock on the focus ring to be rock solid... well remember.

Now I received my Q-P and while turning the ring too far during manual focus it locked into the AF position... this shouldn’t happen, you ought to have to press the lock button... When carefully examining this I then also realized it needs only very little strength to push it out of the AF lock position again... what’s the lock button for then? I’m a pretty weak guy and I’m not pushing hard to break it...

How did your journey end? I think I will return my Q-P and not go through any replacement procedure ...

(I’m new btw hi!)
