Maybe strap lugs are overrated 😉

Perhaps they are, Nigel, but if they are overrated then why does every other 'proper' camera manufactured over the last 90-odd years have them fitted?

I know (obviously) that some Leica M users like to carry their cameras in a half-case (the fools! 😸) so for those folks I suppose the lack of strap-lugs is an irrelevance. Personally I absolutely abhor having a camera in a case except for protection when travelling.

I have a 1930 Leica Model 1 which would be used a Hell of a lot more were it to have lugs. I do have a wrist-strap which I attach to one of those little thingumybobs that screws into the tripod bush but it's nowhere near as convenient as simply being able to attach it onto the left-hand-side strap-lug as I do when using the same strap on the M-D.

just before I acquired the M-D I was very seriously considering an M60 / Steelux set which was being offfered (for a VERY reasonable price) and the only reason I didn't get the set was the lug issue. A mistake, of course, in hindsight from the collecting / financial point of view but for me the M-D is simply more practical as a photographic tool.

FYI I don’t ever use a case - with or without lugs …(and my P version didn’t come with one 😉)

edit - FWIW I don’t have a case for my iPhone or my iPad either….

I didn't assume that you did, Nigel, and my (very much tongue-in-cheek) comment re: half-cases certainly wasn't directed at yourself; nor, indeed, anyone else in particular. I hadn't heard that the P wasn't supplied with a case but I don't really know that much about the P at all. Interesting omission...😸...

Some folks have mentioned that they like to carry their M cameras simply with no strap (nor case!) whatsoever but I'm far too clumsy a person to consider adopting such a practice. Anyhow; as I usually have two cameras with me when shooting the very idea is a non-starter. I do like to use a wrist-strap with my #1 camera when out doing serious snapping and could have used the M60 in much the same fashion as I use my Model 1 but that train, as it were, left the station long ago so the point is wholly academic.

It is, of course, somewhat reassuring to read that so many owners of the M60 do actually use these cameras as intended and don't just keep them as Case Queens.

Pippy - the P version I referred to isn’t along the lines of an M240/10/11-P - it’s a prototype M edition 60 (mine is P17/24 and has no serial number)

I don’t know if it ever had the “regular” series case with attached strap.

A Gordy long wrist strap with a tripod screw fastening would work…

This vintage Leica camera strap has an excellent design and wears comfortably even with the Thumbs Up rest…!

Yes; I remember you having talked about the prototype some time ago. Fascinating to have such a camera.

Yes; it would. This is the (similar) solution I use with the Model 1 shown, for the sake of comparison, with the better less cumbersome (😸) method used with the IIIc;

Unusually (at least according to what I've seen and read) I carry my camera in my left hand(*) so with the Barnack cameras the tripod bush - for me - is located at the 'wrong' end of the baseplate; the result being that the strap needs to be quite a bit longer than is ideal. This wouldn't be such an issue with the M60 as (I suspect?) the bush is centrally-positioned?...

Of course having any bush-affixed strap would mean that the camera couldn't be placed base-down on a surface / table but I suppose that would count as more of an inconvenience than a deal-breaker to ownership

Philip.

* Which, incidentally, is why 'Thumbies' (and their like) are of no interest to me...

Nah!

Two cameras and two strap-lugs; one on the left-hand-side of each body!

Carrying the M60 wouldn't be my problem; I have enough bags to carry stuff around. It's the Not Dropping The M60 When Shooting part that would be my problem...

Like we suggested, the design of leaving the strap lugs off the M60 was a result of a senior moment …!

And I will soon be a Senior and am already having my fair share of Moments as it is....

Here's another, listed several weeks ago:

https://www.popflash.com/pre-owned-equipment/leica-m-p-typ-240-leica-m-edition-60-digital-camera-set-with-35mm-f/1.4-summilux-m-lens-10779-used-mint/

There's a few listed in Europe in the past few months at higher prices, it doesn't appear to be a high demand item, prices are low relative to it's original price but I wouldn't be surprised if the price rises significantly with time, my crystal ball went fuzzy about details and any clairvoyance.
