. To gain some happiness out of it I also ordered a Summaron 28/5.6 😉

Aah! When I took my cameras in to have the sensors cleaned at Leica Mayfair it was my intention to buy a Summaron too.  Unfortunately I ended up having to pay for the sensor instead.  Maybe another time.

I think you have made the correct decision.  If you are generally happy with the camera, the cheapest option still is to have the sensor replaced.

Update: Leica Germany must have some kind of record when it comes to time in process, since it took them two weeks to confirm dust and then, believe it or not, when my local dealer asked them to replace the sensor and at the same time add a Summaron 28 and align it with the camera it resulted in that the dealer had to order one from the Scandinavian agent and had it sent to Germany. So, finally after a month Leica has confirmed they have the camera, lens and placed an order to get the work done, and now it’s just to wait for it to get done and then shipped. I bet on end of May it’s back at my place with sensor and lens, after two months.

How is their distribution set up when you have to send them a lens from another country when it’s built next door? I love the camera and the handmade quality, but I don’t know any company that can compete with them when it comes to time in process. How do they justify it to their owners, knowing that today customers expect both quality and efficiency?

provide with a copy? You lost me there.

If you keep in telephone contact with Leica CS they will provide you with estimated repair times etc.

I wanted to order a Summaron in connection with the sensor replacement, but instead of taking one from their own factory my Swedish dealer had to contact the Danish agent for the Nordic countries and to order one from them and then the agent had to ship it to Germany to get it aligned with the camera. A process that took at least a week extra, when lenses literally are produced next door to be shipped to the rest of the world. Sounds like there is an agreement between agents and Wetzlar that the latter aren’t allowed to sidestep the agents, even though prices are kept strict wherever you are in the world.

Good choice, Magnus. You will have an as new CCD Monochrom, and that is hard to replace

I have a Monochrom (with 28 Summaron) and M10-D (with black chrome APO-Summicron 50) in my bag - great combination.  Sadly, the M-A doesn’t get used much at the moment!

Finally, after two months the camera with a new sensor and a new aligned Summaron is back... and I really hope it was the last time it had to visit Germany.

let us know if everything is in focus!

I'm still quite lost here.  It sounds all very confused and mixed up.

Firstly why should it be aligned to the body? Leica will never do that as it is technical nonsense. Both lenses and cameras are calibrated to a common standard in the factory, and, although sometimes users find a misalignment  when they start using the camera, a lens is certainly not shipped back and forth before delivery for some esoteric wizardry.

I also fail to understand your remark about agreements and agents. Leica, like most companies, has a simple and straightforward shipping policy: Gear is sent out to the importers who distribute it to the dealers, either for stock or to fill a customer order.
And yes, there is a recommended list price. Nothing special there either.

jaapv,

Considering the alignment, I’m not the right person to answer if it’s “esoteric wizardry” or not. I just followed Leica’s own recommendation I received once I bought the camera to always make sure there are no misalignments, and if you claim they don’t do that I cannot answer since I have written and signed receipt of that it was carried out early May in Germany  for the camera and lens.

With respect to the lens I wanted, the thing was that neither the local, national or regional dealer had any in stock and, if I was correctly informed, they had to have one shipped from Germany and then ship it back again to the place where the camera was waiting. Moreover, they did not begin with the sensor replacement until they had received the lens. My only remark was that even though there was a need of paperwork to get everything right, it sounded weird to actually pass around the lens instead of just bring it from one building to another at the same site and not loosing more than a week just in transportation. It sounds to  weird to be true, but this is my understanding based on what I was told in explanation for the delays.

However, camera and lens finally back and time to try it out...

Looking at the first images with the new sensor and lens I come to notice quite a number of “birds” in one of the shots, but when zooming in I realised they were dust spots without any pixel peeping. It came as a total surprise and I stopped to count at 20 of the size that I would normally use spot healing to remove. I have sent dngs to Leica, but is the number really normal? When comparing to old images from the time with the corroded sensor I never saw that many spots. Looking at the images from when I got the first sensor replacement the number of spots of today’s size was less than five then. Even more surprising since I had just unpacked camera and lens and applied the lens as always with camera turned down and in as dust-free place as possible at home. I remember I heard something about a new CCD sensor to be extremely static, and that it was something that would disappear after a while. Is there any truth in that?

regrads,

magnus

Btw, at least a few of the spots looked like the one at the top of this thread, then considered to be signs of corrosion...

To clarify the thing about dust on the new sensor, in this image all spots are colored in white and in the exact size of the dust spots and the image is uncropped.

To me this is too much, what do you think? At a distance of around 50 meters, a spot is as big as a sitting seagull...

I also believe it’s dust, but that much directly from the Leica factory surprise me and is not in line with the amount I have seen in the past.

I can't see the photo but dust sometimes collects in the other parts of the camera, and falls onto the sensor during shipping.  This is probably the reason for the dirty sensor.

As far as I know, Leica does not assemble its cameras and lenses in a clean room.  Indeed, I have received brand new cameras with dust on the sensor: more than once!

If the camera has been used, who knows how much dust is floating around inside.
