28-35-50 Tri Elmar Coding for M8?

Hi Graham,

I thought I answered your question, but I must have pressed the wrong "Commit" button.

When I read all the comments then I must say I seemed to have been lucky.

When I removed the flange I saw the little spring and was worried. But it was only a matter of patience to get it back on. BTW mine is a version 1 TRI.

I work with it for a few weeks now and get the desired results. Just today I did a little bit of testing with and without Leica remedy and cornerfix and I found there was not much difference. The 28 and 35 definetly need compensation, the 50 not.

Regards

Volker

Great explanation HC!

I too think it's ironic the only lens which makes full use of the switches is now discontinued. Seems clear that at the time this scheme was devised, the Tri-Elmar was very much still in the frame as a lens which needed to be supported.

Jaapv (and probably others) have pointed out that the combination of 6 bit lens code and 3 lever settings allows expansion to 189 distinct settings (ignoring the "no code" setting) which they could theoretically use in the future but at the snail's pace of lens introductions, it seems unlikely.

I do wonder whether the end of a product's life is planned at Leica or whether it comes like a bolt out of the blue. An email from a supplier and suddenly, the product is discontinued. Digilux 2, D-Lux 2, Tri-Elmar, DMR, 75/1.4 (maybe), all products which just suddenly disappeared.

Let's hope the supplier of red dots doesn't give up on us...

I am more than pleasantly surprised, Mark, that this ancient post of mine appears not only to have been read, but even remembered.:) At the time I had the feeling I was posting in some invisible cyber-nether-region.:(

I have read all your replies with interest. This particular question and answer space really an example of how well this forum can work in positive mode.

Incidentally I have a Mate (2nd Generation) & a Wate. Both coded and a as travel and everyready combination (including a 12mm Voigt) this is really a terrific set of lenses. (I have other lenses with the speed & bokeh department covered so I have a referance point) and these three lenses are tremedous alrounders. For the doubters I can post to show the evidence.

Is it really true the Mate is dropped? I am very suprised. I am calling my insurance tomorrow and covering it to the max.

Neville, we've known for some time that the original Tri-Elmar is very complex mechanically which makes it expensive and it seems to have been dropped because of problems with one of the elements plus, apparently, low demand because of the limited speed.

Personally, I agree with you, it's a very useful lens and since it has been discontinued, I'm going especially easy on the focal length changing mechanism.
