Dear Leica enthusiasms

I would be very grateful if someone could provide me with the best possible settings when it comes to contrast, sharpness, saturation and noise reduction level. I am overall looking for that combination of factors that could reproduce the most accurately possible reality.

Thank you in advance for your precious time

I'm not sure that there are any "best" settings, just the ones that suit you best. There's no substitute for taking a lot of pictures at different settings in different circumstances and learning what works best for you.

For the version of reality that suits me I usually have the camera set to:

Contrast - standard

Sharpness - low

Saturation - standard

Noise reduction - low

A camera, whether it's fllm or digital, does not reproduce reality: it merely produces an image the way the camera can reord it — it's then up to the photographer to create his interpretation. For this reason there are no "best settings". The best thing, as Henry says, is to shoot RAW and then do what you want with it; but that means learning how to do extensive post-processing. If you shot JPGs and just print them, then you're getting the equivalent of prints from the local drugstore. The following V-Lux 1 portrait is not reality: it's an interpretation. Remember Magritte's painting: "Ceci n'est pas une pipe."

Shoot Raw, then just make your adjustments in whatever converter you're using.

Patrick was asking about the picture adjustment settings for JPEGs.

Plenty of digital photographers use JPEG sometimes even if they usually use RAW, especially when they're learning their way around a new camera.

Why not lend him a hand and share your preferred JPEG settings with him?

I've had the V Lux since Nov. last year and have tried most possible combinations. At the moment I have everything on LOW except for Sharpness which is on Standard. It is producing excellent straight out of the camera JPEG's. However I too have started shooting RAW and am only using the settings for my horse racing stuff.

Regards,

PJG.

I've noticed it before in this forum. Someone asks a simple question and, instead of getting straightforward replies, gets answers to a question they didn't ask.
And what I've noticed is that often when people provide useful informaton some self-appointed thread-policeman comes along to say that the question isn't being answered.
