M8 multiple pics on SD card

Hello fellow M8 users,

I have my M8 since january of this year but have waited to comment on the camera until my 2 free IR filters arrived ( for WATE and 21 mm; the other ones I ordered haven't arrived yet): now that I have them I realize that they are absolutely necessary and I cannot go without them. For the WATE the solution is somewhat cumbersome since the construction of filter carrier + filter + stray light eliminator (for the M8 only) doesn't contain a front element to protect the filter and therefore has to be taken off between shots.

My number one problem( for which I didn't find any thread but maybe I missed it ) is that when I download my pictures from the 4 GB SD card I have multiple pictures for each picture I took (I always take 10 Mb DNG only): when I take 100 pictures there are 300 pics sittting on my SD card on different directories that I don't want. In addition the order in which I took the pics is completely changed from the order I took them in. I have reformated the SD card several times but to no avail. I am also quite sure I didn't have this problem at the beginning.

For the rest I am extremely satisfied of the M8 and its lenses although I now only use a subset of my lenses (WATE, 28 mm f2 asph, 75 mm f2 asph mainly yielding all three spectaculer pictures. On the M6 I used all lenses including the 21 mm f2,8; 35 mm F1,4 asph. 50 mm f2, 90 mm f2 asph, but maybe that will change) .

I thought I still would use my M6 for B/W but I haven't since with CS2 I can achieve almost the same result. I am happy with Capture one although I wished the Moiré filter was also included in the light version.

On rare occasion I miss a flash. The SF20 worked fine on the M6 but is totally useless on the M8.

Only now, with the IR problem resolved, am I absolutely convinced the M8 is a superb camera giving perfect pics from 160 to 640 ASA ( OK, the WB is off a lot but that can be mended).

The camera opens new ways of new creativity which I am happy to discover and when I enlarge the pictures on my PC I am always astonished by the quality of the lenses even at extreme enlargments. The 75 mm f2 asph is really unbelievable, the WATE and the 28 mm are also extreme performers.

Thanks Leica

Protect the 67mm filter setup ( if that's what your talking about) with a Canon 67mm lenscap at EUR 7,--. Looks cool :-)

Sorry: My reaction to only a small part of your post does not do it justice. I fully concur with your views on the Leica M8!

Marc--

Welcome to the forum and to M8 ownership.

Your description of turning up several copies of images sounds to me like software. You may have a couple different programs that automatically load images when they see an SD card.

I don't let the computer load images. I put the card in a card reader, copy the new files to a particular folder (named "to file" in my case), and process from there.

To see whether the M8 is generating more than one file (I doubt that it is), put the SD card in the card reader and look at it with your file software (Explorer or Finder). I think you'll find there's only one DNG per shot on the card. If so, duplicates on your computer can only be arising within the computer.

Good to have you aboard!

As others have said this sounds very much like a computer problem. How are the three directories named - that might give us a clue. Since you know how big each DNG file is and how many pictures you have actually taken does the computer tell you the correct value for the space used/remaining on the card?

If the file numbers show the pictures in a different order to the taking order, what happens if you sort and display the files by time/date. They should then be displayed in the taking order.

It could be worth trying a different card reader. I had a reader which would show three drives when a card was inserted.

Bob.

You are right

I tried it ot this morning after having made 9 photos

downloading with the microsoft scanner and camera wizzard I found 18 pictures over 2 directories this time ( named M8 digital camera and 100Leica)

taking the SD card out and downloading with the same SW I only find 9 pictures under the 100Leica directory.

Still a bit strange

Strange indeed, Marc!

Again, my recommendation is not to let Microsoft's "Wizards" do the work, but to do it by dragging the files from the card to the place where you want them.

Good luck!
