-teo- Posted February 6, 2019 Share #1 Posted February 6, 2019 Advertisement (gone after registration) Today my M8 lost rangefinder coupling with Summarit-M 35/2.5. Double image is visible, but it won't move when turning the lens focusing ring. Frame lines are visible. First I checked RF window, it was clean and not blocked. Then I removed the lens and checked RF coupling arm. The arm is sticky, I can move it by finger, but it's not coming back to home position. What to do? Should I send my camera to Leica service? Advertisement Posted February 6, 2019 Posted February 6, 2019 Hi -teo-, Take a look here M8 lost RF coupling. What to do?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
pgk Posted February 6, 2019 Share #2 Posted February 6, 2019 Sounds as though either the return spring has been displaced or broken or something has moved and is fouling the RF coupling arm - which you probably realise. Question is whether anyone other than Leica can repair this? On an M8 I'd suggest sending it to Leica - it should be a straightforward repair and so not too costly but others might be able to tell you how much needs to be removed to get at the arm and can advise better on this. Personally I'd send it to Leica and see what they say - the only snag being that they may find other things which they recommend dealing with at the same time and thereby increase the cost. jaapv Posted February 6, 2019 Share #4 Posted February 6, 2019 You could consult a third-party repair shop, as this is a mechanical problem and not digital-M specific. It does not sound too dramatic.
-teo- Posted February 6, 2019 Author Share #5 Posted February 6, 2019 Thank you, jaapv! I hope the fix is not very expensive.
-teo- Posted February 9, 2019 Author Share #6 Posted February 9, 2019 The fix was really easy. It took only 15 min. and one drop of lubricate. The videos were helpful: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mTXPLaNPE9o https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aeisS81_HrI Thanks everybody!
Nordvik Posted February 10, 2019 Share #7 Posted February 10, 2019 Advertisement (gone after registration) Very interesting videos. I am tempted to take top off my M8 just out of curiosity. Do not see it is necessary for rangefinder adjustment though. I thought all you needed was to take off the Leica logo? My M8 rangefinder also got stuck temporarily. Then it fixed it self. Nordvik, I didn't remove the Leica logo, I only removed top cover and put a drop of Super Lube to one spot where RF got stuck.
Nordvik Posted February 10, 2019 Share #9 Posted February 10, 2019 That is comforting. I like that you can fix your camera yourself.
