T00m Posted January 30, 2019 Share #1 Posted January 30, 2019 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hey, does anyone have experience / know a bagpack which could hold a SL with 24-90 which is suitable for hiking (1 day Tours)? Would be great if there‘s an extra Space for the SL which is separately and easy accessible. Thanks Christian

Thanks Christian Like a lot of folks I've tried most options, including the Lowepro 'ProTactic' and 'Whistler'; both are great in keeping the SL and its lenses secure, but leave little room for any hiking kit, especially in winter conditions. I'm using the 'bag in a bag' solution at the moment - Lowe Alpine AirZone Trek with 2 x Tenba BYOB Camera Insert bags; one for the SL 24-90 and one for the CL or M262. The rucksack has a useful side accessed compartment where the SL sits, and a flask, tripod and spare gear all fit in nicely.

See eg The fstop Navin bag is the smallest possible for the SL+24-90 combo. I use Peak Design anchors and PD Slide Lite https://www.peakdesign.com/collections/straps/products/slide-lite (but lots of straps do the job); letting the strap going diagonal over one shoulder, and fixing the pouch at the backpack's hip belt. In this way the camera is fixed to the body, the arms are free, and it takes only a few seconds to open the top of the pouch and pick up the camera. This has worked for me for 10+ years, on short as well as week-long and strenous hikes. Edited January 30, 2019 by helged

Too bad, with 106 posts covering probably 20 packs, some of which are ideal for smaller loads as noted, and as you requested. Sorry to bother you. jon m Posted January 30, 2019 Share #8 Posted January 30, 2019 The f stop Navin looks nice. Something like that to fit a Q might work for me. Until then I'm trying to figure out how best to use the Matador Base Layer. It's a little awkward needing to be rolled and unrolled, and I haven't figured out a way to attach it to a pack for stability.

You can always put a suitable sized compartment - a la one of the fstop icus https://fstopgear.com/products/icu - at the bottom, or top, of your backpack. I do this when I carry several bodies/lenses with me.

Thanks Christian I think you need to be much more specific in listing your requirements ..... type of hiking, weather, size, weight etc. etc. At the moment it's a bit like asking us 'what car should I buy' ..... To be honest if you are just carrying an SL+24/90 I'd get a Handgrip + Peak Design Slide and carry it outside of a backpack most of the time .... it's robust and weather sealed ...... in which case just get a bag that suits your hiking requirements with enough room to stick the camera in the top if conditions are terrible ...... I use Mindshift Backlight bags ...... but my primary consideration is carrying quite an extensive combination of gear + tripod(s) for landscape photography ...... with a minimal amount of extra clothing/snacks to ensure survival whilst waiting for LNER to finish on the SL.

I have actually learned a lot from the thread as Jeff mentions. - If fast access is important and if you want to carry quite some hiking gear like you suggest with the 30L backpack in the image above, then I would recommend the ROTATION180° PROFESSIONAL 38L STANDARD EDITION. I have one and it works beautifully with the SL and 24-90.
